Before air conditioners were invented, life was significantly less comfortable. People came up with all sorts of ways to keep cool, especially in hot seasons. At that time, most buildings were designed to let in enough air. They did that by installing higher ceilings and more windows. This style was quite prevalent in the Southern part of the US.
This article gives you a recap of 100 years history of air conditioning, especially in the US.
Circa 1920
New improvements kept coming in until circa 1920, when air conditioning units became smaller and more reliable through innovations. During this time, only a few people could afford to install the air conditioners. That’s due to the prices of acquiring new units and the cost of accessing air conditioning repair. The slow embracement of the smaller unit was also because not many people saw the systems as valuable. Instead, they thought such things only belonged to individuals at the top of the pyramid. This false notion would change many years later as technology kept getting better by the day.
Circa 1929
In 1929, Frigidaire, a refrigerator maker, came up with a small room cooler that people could place in their homes to cool up the air. The problem, however, is that many people found it too expensive, so it was not widely used. But this innovation gave birth to air conditioners in cars, window box units, and the inception of new home designs that could let in adequate natural air. However, it’s worth noting that comfort cooling was reluctantly adopted until after the Great Depression and the Second World War.
How About Today
Today, we have modern air conditioners with a wide range of features. They can rely on a plethora of sources of power to ensure that the surrounding air is kept cool at all times. They work faster and do not consume a lot of energy. Though not so many homes have the latest units, in the US, more than 80% of homes in the US have air conditioners in their perfect working conditions. This is because summer is always unforgiving, making it hard to stay in a home without a good system to regulate the house temperature.
Wrap-Up
Air conditioners have existed around us for many years. The only difference is that they have undergone a lot of changes. Despite your location in the US, you can always get a trusted company to help you install the units.
