Women And Construction

In the American workforce, the gender gap may not be any more prevalent than in the construction industry. An workforce comprised of only 9 percent of women, there are even fewer working on construction sites, with about 1 percent actually working on a construction site.

However, despite this massive gap, there are women who are paving their way into the future of the industry. And as the need to fill 1.6 million construction workers in the next five years, companies are starting to look to women to help fill these much needed positions.

Construction equipment rental site, BigRentz, put together the below infographic that outlines the state of women in the construction industry. Here are some of the highlights that show the bright future of women in construction:

• Although they are only at around 9% now, women are expected to make up 25% of the industry by 2020.
• There was a 15% growth of women-owned construction firms in 2017.

After looking at female leaders in the industry, they found a few other interesting trends. Only 3% of construction managers at Fortune 500 firms are female. But digging deeper the numbers look a little more promising. 44% of the top 100 contracting companies have women in executive roles, with 16% in C-level positions.
