Cyber Attacks On The Web

Reports of major data breaches and cyber attacks are popping up more and more in the news. Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica incident, Quora’s leak and even the recent Marriott breach reminds us how close these attacks can hit us. In data breaches, millions of accounts were compromised and sensitive information like usernames, passwords, payment information, social security numbers and more are put at risk. Sometimes we’re not even completely aware of all of the information companies (even our own workplaces) have on us and how much has potentially been leaked. Despite its big headlines and serious danger, some people still don’t believe that cyber attacks can happen to them.

The World Economic Forum’s 2018 Global Risks Report says that cyber attacks are among the top three risks to global stability in the next five years along with natural disasters and extreme weather. Many people are quick to prepare and respond to physical risks, but what about protecting ourselves from cyber attacks?

Perhaps the big headlines make these breaches seem like they won’t happen to us. To put this into perspective, Varonis compared the likelihood of a cyber attack to other “rare” occurrences to see just how likely an attack is for us.
