Strategies to Overcome Anxiety
While there are many different ways to deal with anxiety, identifying the sources of your stress is often the best place to start. This means you can predict when anxiety may arise and proactively plan ways to either change the situation or change your reaction.
- Get some exercise, and make it regular. Scientific research has shown that physical activity can help to reduce stress levels and elevate overall mood. During exercise, our body releases chemicals, known as endorphins, which can reduce our perception of pain, promote positive emotions, and improve our ability to sleep. In fact, even 5 minutes of aerobic exercise (e.g. walking, running, or yoga) can relieve symptoms of anxiety, according to the American Psychology Association.
- Practice slow breathing. When anxiety arises, your muscles tense up, and your breathing accelerates and becomes more shallow. To help slow your heart rate, and distract yourself from the problem, try taking long, deep breaths in and out for just five minutes.
- Stay in the present and cultivate optimistic thinking. Anxiety can cause your mind to wander and consider worst-case scenarios about events that haven’t happened yet. Try to stay in the moment and avoid contemplating millions of potential scenarios that will never actually come to fruition.
- Repeatedly exposing yourself to the trigger. Anxiety often arises from irrational fears, which can often result in avoidance behaviors. For example, it’s common for people with social anxiety to avoid public speaking or large gatherings of people. In these situations, exposing yourself to the stressful situation can progressively reduce your anxiety and allow you to gain more confidence.
- Record your thoughts for later. Are your thoughts keeping you awake at night? Writing down your feelings instead of replaying them over and over again in your head can make it easier to fall asleep at night. Once jotted down, you can always revisit those worries in the morning. Also, keeping a diary can help determine underlying triggers.

Anxiety disorders affect over 40 million adults (aged over 18) in the United States every year.  People who suffer from an anxiety disorder can experience a constant sense of fear and impending panic that interferes with their everyday life. The persistent symptoms can become so intense they make it difficult to concentrate, sleep, and even carry out ordinary tasks. Why Medical Marijuana is Effective For Anxiety?
Marijuana has been used for centuries to calm the mind and body. Now, research is confirming what we expected all along–marijuana effectively alleviates symptoms of anxiety.
Marijuana contains over 100 active chemical constitutes, known as cannabinoids. The two most abundant are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is the main cannabinoid used to treat anxiety as its non-psychoactive and does not trigger a “high” or alter consciousness. In fact, research has shown that CBD has a calming effect on our body’s central nervous system.
In a recent study, 72 adults presenting with anxiety and poor sleep were given 25-75 mg of CBD per day for one month. Anxiety levels significantly decreased in 79% of patients, while 67% of patients improved their sleeping habits. 
In another study, patients with generalized social anxiety disorder (GAD) were given 60mg of CBD or a placebo before participating in a simulated public speaking test. Pre-treatment with CBD was shown to significantly reduce anxiety-related symptoms, including reduced blood pressure, heart rate, skin flushing, speech discomfort, and cognitive impairment. 
Scientists have further corroborated the anti-anxiety effects of CBD through brain scans that demonstrate cerebral blood circulation patterns are consistent with a reduction in anxiety.
