Confessions of the Professions Becomes More Secure
August 20, 2018 – After years of running Confessions of the Professions, we have held off for as long as we could as we really did not feel we needed https or an SSL certificate. To make matters harder, we were running on a CDN through a DNS record that did not allow us to add an SSL certificate to the website.
We had, however, wanted to get an SSL certificate on Confessions of the Professions by 2018, but had no way to really make this happen. Our CDN solution, with DreamObjects from DreamHost, had ended support for their West servers and forced us to move all of our images to the new server on the East servers. During the weekend of August 17th – August 20th, our images were down for nearly the entire weekend as we transferred over 30,000 images to the new server, including our infographics.
As a push forward, we decided there was no harm in returning to the DNS record, and decided to link to the raw CDN images. While this may affect SEO, we are torn between: having the search engines see our images hosted on a CDN rather than through our website, or adding an SSL certificate. It was decided that the SSL certificate, moving forward, especially with what we know from Google’s plans, to have every website secure and showing an SSL certificate, that we needed to choose the better of the two options we had.
Thus, on September 1st, 2018, we added an SSL certificate to our website. Whether this means that our website is more secure, though it always has been, can only be pure speculation. You still have every right to download images and infographics from our website as you see fit. We do ask that if you do use our infographics, you at least give credit where it is due, and link back to our website or mention Confessions of the Professions somewhere on the page where specifically the infographic is located.
When you now visit www.confessionsoftheprofessions.com, you will land directly at https://www.confessionsoftheprofessions.com and not http://www.confessionsoftheprofessions.com. You may still type in confessionsoftheprofessions.com however you landed on our website, but you will now be directed to a secure Confessions of the Professions.
