Confessions of the Professions Updates To Dedicated Server
June 15, 2018 — Over 5 years ago, Confessions of the Professions started off on a small shared host. Within the year, we knew we were outgrowing our server and decided to move it to a managed web hosts known as DreamPress where we remained for at least two more years. Unfortunately, with managed hosting comes extreme limitations on what we were able to do, including restarting our own server on demand. Occasionally, we would notice the site go down afterhours, but our host decided their support would only be during the day, which influenced our decision to switch off the server and on to the servers of Vultr where we have remained since.
While Vultr has the servers we needed, at the time, we put it on a host that we felt would suffice, but we knew it would eventually outgrow the server too. We heavily optimized the server for caching and hoped for the best. It was not the way we were proud of doing, but it was the only affordable server that could host Confessions of the Professions.
With increasing bandwidth demands, we were looking for a more permanent solution and home for this website. Through customization of themes and plugins and years of writing and publishing articles, we knew our website was slow, and we received plenty of emails from the SEO companies, who, although looking to upsell a service, confirmed what we already knew: we had a slow website that took several moments to load because the resources it was using were maxing out, thus taking longer to load pages.
After spending a month building our own web hosting service on a Vultr dedicated server, we saw the immediate results of not only a faster and optimized frontend website, but a backend that loaded instantly and without error. We are proudly still hosting with Vultr on a managed WordPress host, known as WP Bubble, where we hope to happily remain. Server times and server speeds increased by letters and by points, thus proving that we really needed to do this in order to keep Confessions of the Professions running at high speeds that could keep up with the rest of the Internet.
We hope you notice the difference and continue to enjoy your experience on our website.
