There’s mixed news emerging in the retail activewear market, but it’s rapidly gaining momentum. This upward movement is driven by the growing athleisure sector – where casual wear is starting to permeate office dress codes.
Nevertheless, big-name sports retailers are losing some ground due to the increased presence of major online players such as Amazon. Simultaneously, they’re demolishing small, local competitors, and overall, brick-and-mortar sports retail sales are dropping, while online sales are rising slightly.
The athleisure trend is currently the hottest vertical in sportswear. The athletic clothing subcategory is responsible for a considerable percentage of growth in sports clothing retail sales. It’s mostly younger consumers who are driving this growth. Apparently, there are many individuals among younger generations who want to look fit – even if they’re not.
Foremost, according to industry experts, athleisure is comfortable, and some doubt that offices will ever see the return of the days of suits, ties and smart looking shoes every day. Today, in fact, some young executives don their business suits accompanied by stylish sneakers.
