Boredom is for those who choose to be Bored
“’‘I’m bored’ is a useless thing to say. I mean, you live in a great, big, vast world that you’ve seen none percent of. Even the inside of your own mind is endless; it goes on forever, inwardly, do you understand? The fact that you’re alive is amazing, so you don’t get to say ‘I’m bored.’” – Louis CK
Are you bored? Boredom should be the farthest thing from your mind. It baffles me when people claim they are bored and “there is nothing to do.” If you have an idea, a book, a computer, a place in mind to visit, family or friends, or even if you are alone, boredom should never cross your mind. There is so much to do and you have about 80 years (equivalent to 960 months, 4,174.2 weeks, 29,219.4 days, 701,265 hours, 42,075,936 minutes, 2,524,554,080 seconds) to do it. You will face plenty of obstacles, not have enough money to do certain things, and you still have to work, but for the most part, you can probably do anything you want to do if you work for it and want it bad enough.
Boredom is just another way of saying that you are boring. I stopped saying “I’m bored” when I was a teenager. And I hate when people say it. Seriously? If you are bored, you have probably never experienced what it is like to learn to play an instrument, play a sport, or explored your own skills and talents. You may have not met many new people or traveled or figured out why bees can fly when its technically physically impossible for them to do so, or understood how a hummingbird flaps its wings so fast and looks like an insect, or why a moth evolved to look exactly like a hummingbird.
If you are bored, you probably do not look up at the stars at night and realize you are looking into the distant past – that the light of those stars took millions and billions of years to reach Earth just now – that the same light you are looking at now just started to travel when the dinosaurs roamed the planet. Some of those stars do not even exist anymore — have long died out, but we see them as if they do currently exist. Try to grasp the concept that there are a trillion – uncountable amount of galaxies and planets, stars, and solar systems – and plenty of intelligent and non-intelligent life forms that exist, have existed, and have long gone extinct.
Try to grasp the fact that the Earth itself is billions of years old with life that has existed and long gone extinct. There are plenty of species on this Earth that we will never know about because they have long eroded into dust. There are plenty of species that die out before we have even discovered them. Long after the homo sapien species dies out, there will probably still be many other lifeforms after humans.
There are also the unexplainable pyramids and many other structures, advanced ancient human life that we cannot explain – how they built all they did without “modern technology”. They were able to somehow lift tons of blocks of granite, limestone, and other materials without any machinery – weight that would take a few dozen trucks or machines to even be possible. What could be the explanation for how our primitive ancestors lived and how they worked to get things done without “technology”?
Maybe history has lied to us, but then, we would have proof that such technology exists. We should be able to find the proof of the blueprints the formed the pyramids and other ancient buildings. Yet, none of these things have ever been found. However, no intelligent species designs a building without concrete geometrical and mathematical information, as trying to build without knowing proper dimensions would lead to misshaped buildings and towers that would crumble easily – building and towers that still stand today as strong as they did centuries ago.
There is also life in the oceans that we are still just discovering and creatures deep in the ocean that we have not seen yet that are larger than houses and thrive not on sunlight, but on the sea life of the ocean floor and the gases that spew out of the crust of the Earth. There are whole colonies in the trillions of microscopic life that we have never examined before living in small puddles of water and mud. There are bacteria and viruses that can survive in below freezing temperatures and still exist in temperatures as hot as the atmosphere of Venus. There are bacteria and viruses that can be both helpful and harmful to any living species.
There is also the evolution of mankind. If you look to the past hundred years, man has come along far too fast. There has been more accomplished in terms of technology in the 21st century than any other century that has passed. Humans continue to thrive and advanced very quickly.
There is also the unsettling fact that our metabolisms and our bodies still function the same as our ancestors did, with the hunter-gatherer mentality, and have not evolved or adapted to the standards of food today. While we still eat meat, fish, chicken, there is so much artificial food that our bodies cannot and will not adapt to, despite the fact that we are still able consume it for our entire lives.
The evolution of mankind goes beyond understanding our eating habits, to the fact that we can adapt to almost any weather condition, adapt to any situation, and there is also the unexplainable fact that there are some extraordinary human beings that exist – Da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Freud, Einstein, and many more – whose thoughts and vision have advanced humanity beyond human comprehension.
When it comes to traveling, there is a whole world that the majority of humans never see. They never meet people outside of their town, their state, or even the country. There are even some people who have never even seen what a Jewish person looks like and believe they have horns, based off the mistake that Michelangelo made in his depiction of the statue of the Jewish Moses. There are many people who never eat more than just a few different kinds of food dishes, experienced different flavors of sodas – which are different throughout the world, or taste the many blends of coffee beans grown throughout the different parts of the world.
There are people who have never had Falafel, Schnitzel, Schwarma, Blintzes, Borsche, Latkes, or any other types of dishes from around the world. There is Caribbean, Chinese, French, Greek, Russian, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Mediterranean, Mexican, Moroccan, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Iranian, Israeli, Bulgarian, Ethiopian, African, Korean, Philippine, Vietnamese, and many more food dishes from all over the world that most people have never tried.
There are people who have never flown in an airplane, rode on a jet ski, went skinny dipping, or jumped out of an airplane. There are others who were not open-minded enough to speak with a homosexual man or a lesbian woman, or never learned another language and actually spoke to someone in that language. The list could go on and on about what people have or have not done.
The fact is that the world is an interesting, fascinating, unique place, with history we will never know and some of it will only ever be speculation. Open your eyes, your mind, your heart, your ears, your nose, your taste, your touch to the world. The world can definitely be a cruel place, with lots of evil happening all around you. However, there are also plenty of good people in the world and there are certainly parts of the world where it is like Heaven on Earth. While you should never trust everyone and use your own judgement and discretion, be weary of your surroundings, but give people a chance to earn your trust and friendship. You may have something to offer the world, but the world will surely have something to offer you.
If boredom still strikes a human being, than they may as well dig a hole now and get used to it. If you found this article boring, well then, stop reading and go outside! If you find life boring, well then, start making it interesting! Go do something with your life! Before you know it, it will pass before your eyes and your story will be over or you will not get to do all that you want to do! Write a good book of your life, cherish the memories, have no regrets, and be able to look back on your life and know that you were never bored or that boredom never crossed your mind.
