Making Your First Good Impression On Your First Day At Work
Relationships in the workplace influence everything to do with your career, from your short- and long-term prospects to how you enjoy your day-to-day working life.
And first impressions have a disproportionate impact on how those relationships develop. In just thirty seconds each person that you meet makes a full assessment on your intelligence and attractiveness. Sounds unfair? Unfortunately, it’s our animal nature.
But you can take steps to control the process. Cutting ‘ums’ and ‘ahs’ out of your speech helps, for a start. That might not be easy if you’re nervous, but you can prepare to come across more confidently by researching everything you can about the industry and the organization in which you’ll be working. That way you’ll come across more intelligent and confident.
As for your levels of attractiveness, it’s not – and should not be – all about sex appeal. Rather, by giving a firm but not overbearing handshake, wearing neatly kept but unshowy clothes, and showing your interest in the people you meet through body language and asking questions, you can establish yourself as somebody with whom others will want to work and share opportunities.
For more precise ideas on how to do that, try working through this new infographic from OnStride Financial. And relax – everyone you’re meeting is working on their first impression, too!
