How Much Data You Need
Running out of data is a very common, pervasive problem these days. Even though more people are moving towards unlimited data plans, there are still many people who have a data limit of 3-20GB a month. Therefore, it is important to ration your data usage, especially if you’re often on the go. How much data you use depends on the apps you use. Gaming apps on average use up relatively very little data – only 0.01GB per hour – whereas Instagram can use 0.72GB in an hour. This is no small amount of data. You’d have to listen to 160 songs on Spotify or watch 1 hour of hi-res content on Netflix to exhaust 1GB of data.
The reason we tend to drain our data quickly is because many of the apps we use have background processes running that require massive amounts of data. Most of them offer ways to disable such functionalities in their settings, which many users are unaware of. For example, you can toggle off auto playing videos in the Facebook and Instagram applications, and turn on Travel Mode in Snapchat. On a more general scale, you can change some settings within your phone to reduce your data usage. Turning off Background App Refresh can go a long way to saving you some data. Developing a habit of relying on WiFi as much as possible is an easy step to conserve data.
Panda Security has collected all this information and more in their infographic, so take some steps towards making sure you save as much data as possible! If you have an unlimited plan, these tips will still help you save battery on your phone so you can stay on-the-go without worrying about it.
