Continuous advancements in mobile technology allowed phones to have two SIM cards instead of only one per device. This development provided notable advantages for many mobile device users for years, and its continued rise in popularity is now becoming a regular feature in most Android smartphones.

Mobile devices with dual SIM features allow individuals, especially professionals and business owners, to have two phone numbers with only one phone. Business people can use their personal phones to make personal communications with one SIM card and business matters on the other.

Business travellers can keep down their carrier service costs by using a foreign country’s local SIM card alongside the standard SIM card the traveller has.

Since around 80% of mobile users in Asia use Android phones, dual SIM technology is more prevalent in the region with multiple nations.

iPhone-dominated areas like the U.S. and the U.K. are seemingly unaware of dual SIM technology, but iPhone XS and XS Max released in September 2018 also has a dual SIM capability with their eSIM that doesn’t use a physical SIM card. The lack of a physical SIM eliminates both the cost and the hassle associated with connecting devices.

The eSIM introduced in iPhones is considered as secure as the traditional SIM card technology, and GSMA has started to certify the various companies providing eSIM services following existing security requirements implemented in the production of conventional SIM cards.
