Getting married is a major moment in a couple’s life together. But after the wedding is over, newlyweds have to make another major decision– where to set down roots. And there are many things for couples to consider, where they can stretch their budgets to save money to potentially buy a home, where they’ll have access to restaurants, nightlife and other young people their age, and where they’ll be able to affordably raise a child.
A new study by Destify is shedding light on the top cities for newlyweds. The study looked at more than 300 US cities with populations greater than 100,000 people and analyzed them based on five key factors conducive to the newly married life: median income, average housing price, cost of raising a child, population of similarly aged individuals, and access to nightlife.
The best city to spend the honeymoon phase (and stretch their budgets farther) is Pittsburgh! Other cities topping the list include Little Rock, St. Louis, Orlando, Atlanta, Columbia, Baltimore, Savannah, Tyler and Irving, Texas. These communities offer relatively affordable home prices for potential first-time home buyers to set down roots. They also have high affordability scores based on the Economic Policy Institute’s Family Budget Cost of Living Calculator. When you think about settling down for the long run, couples want to keep in mind their overall potential budget and projected expenses for things like food, taxes, entertainment, transportation, and the costs associated with raising any potential children. On the flip side, other cities in the US are much less conducive to newlywed lifestyle and finances. Many of the worst cities on the list fell in California and outside New York City, where the median home price vastly outweighs the median income.
