Healthcare provides ample job opportunities for both genders. Therefore, it’s not surprising that healthcare is one of the two sectors that struck a balance between female and male-led businesses.
Healthcare workers have plenty of options. They can work in hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient centers, laboratories, research centers, etc. Thanks to telemedicine, work from home has become a feasible option for healthcare workers, especially women who often find it more difficult to achieve a good work-life balance.
Still, being a woman in healthcare is not easy. There’s still a huge gender pay gap. Even though women outperform men in some areas, female primary care and specialist doctors earn 25% and 36% less than their male colleagues.
Closing the gender pay gap is complex, but there is a solution. One way to fix this is to work on pay transparency. Employees are usually advised not to talk about how much they make, and that’s exactly why the awareness of pay inequality is lacking.
The other method of solving the pay gap is to work on equal promotion opportunities for women in medicine. Fixing the promotion guidelines, including women in search committees, and providing grants to support their careers can be easily achieved if there’s a will to do so.
