Since spring break is pretty much here, that means summer is not far off. But before students get ready for three months of being assignment free and enjoying the sun, they have a few more weeks with their teachers in school. Teachers want to send their students off the right way. Read on to learn how to make the last days of school memorable.
Get Students Excited for Summer
Trust us; your students are already geeked to the max about summer vacation. Nonstop homework and learning will do that to kids. But teachers should show they’re interested in their students’ passions outside academics. Show them you really care.
Have everyone in the class create a summer bucket list. Don’t put a limit on the number of activities they want to do. Encourage them to list as many as they want; the sky’s the limit. Then ask them to share their top two or three with the rest of the class.
Give Them the Ultimate Assignment
Ugh, we know—not more schoolwork. But this will be an assignment they want to participate in! Make sure it’s a group activity that adheres to at least one of the lessons you taught them during the school year.
It could be as simple as an end-of-the-year rocket project. Some may require more work than others, but in the end, the blast-off will be well worth it. Any project that requires a little outside time is also a good idea. The weather is getting nice, so you might as well enjoy it.
Throw an Award Show
The Grammys and the Oscars have nothing on the students in your class. They’re the real superstars, and as such, they deserve real praise. Throw an award show celebrating every student’s progress and accomplishments over the year.
The categories don’t all have to be academic. Every class has that one student who makes everyone laugh, and they should get an award for their talents—even if it was disruptive at times. You want everyone to feel equally appreciated.
Dance the Day Away
You can’t necessarily dance the night away because the school day ends at three or four p.m. But you can dance the day away. Everyone loves a good dance party, and let’s face it, music and good pizza will always be crowd-pleasers.
On the last day of school or a couple of days before, order pizza and put one of your students in charge of the playlist—all appropriate music, of course. All those days sitting at their desks have your students a little antsy. Now’s the time for them to let loose and dance like they don’t have a care in the world. Because for the next three months, they won’t.
Soon you’ll get a new wave of students, but first, you want to make the last days of school memorable for your current ones.
