Even though the number one job of an educator is to teach their students the things they need to know to move on to the next grade, this profession extends way beyond that. As a teacher, you need to find ways to inspire your kids and help them to become the best version of themselves that they can be. If you’re unsure how to do that, this short guide covering some ways that a teacher can assist their students beyond the classroom will be able to help you out.
Motivate Those Who Are Struggling
Giving your students the information they need to learn is one thing—motivating them to utilize it is another. Many teachers use reward systems to help encourage students to achieve their full potential, but it’s also important to incentivize those who are struggling to push themselves.
Try setting smaller goals for these students to accomplish. Once they hit those, they can move on to bigger and better ones. On top of that, you can also find ways to show them that they have value outside of their grades. Identify other things they’re good at and try to find ways to incorporate those skills into their learning.
Convince Them To Follow Their Passions
An important thing to remember about school is that it’s about more than just passing your classes. It’s also about making friends and discovering passions. Not every student will be into the standard subjects they’re required to take to graduate. Some students will prefer things that aren’t usually taught in a classroom.
An excellent example of this is band. While band class is an option in most schools, it typically requires a lot of extra work after school. Because of this, many students might get discouraged and not pursue it. Even if you’re not the band teacher, you can show these students how joining the school marching band can benefit them. You can also show them how fun it is and explain how it won’t feel like a waste of time.
Of course, there are many other ways a teacher could help their students follow their passions for other after-school programs or specialized classes, but it’s up to you how you go about that. You might need to learn more about these programs yourself in order to give good advice, but you always have the power to encourage your students to try them out.
Make Yourself Available
Even though teachers are always available during classroom hours, not all stick around after the final bell rings. Even though that signifies that the day is over, some students like to come in for extra help. Making yourself available during these times is crucial for their continued development.
Also, it’s important to realize that after-school meetings can extend past regular education. Sometimes, a student just needs to talk to a trusted adult about problems going on in their lives. If you take the time to hear them out, you could end up doing a lot of good for them.
You should get the school counselor involved if things are bad enough, but you should still try to stay involved when that happens instead of pawning your student off on someone else. This will make all the difference for those that need help.
