Alternatives To Hosting Registration
Author Note: Since this article was written about 2 years ago, and just published now, some of these websites no longer exist, or have changed, but have been left in to preserve their memory.
In the quest of The Art of Not Blogging and The Art of Not Hosting Images, I have written about finding things that don’t require commitment in the form of registration, signing up, or putting in personal information, especially email addresses. There are plenty of websites where I can completely understand why registration is required and information is needed, but for the most part, it is hard to fathom what websites are doing with this information, if anything, and it is just software requirements that need input to create generic IDs and profiles for people.
For those who worry about security issues, the “administrator”, “owner”, or “webmaster” of any website can see who exists and information about their users. This is the main concern for people who might refuse or fear signing up for a website. The administrator can technically see basic information inside each individual user profile, while the frameworks of most advanced websites do actually encrypt certain types of data, such as passwords, credit cards numbers, and other personal and identifying information, if necessary.
The main reason for most websites to require registration information is to create an account with all of your personal information for you personally and no one else. If you are making backups, maintaining a personal identity online, or just storing files or images, for your own personal keep, than it makes sense for the user to setup a profile and return back to it at any time. However, this is not always the case and there are plenty of people just looking for quick uploads, quick storage, and quick download or display of files.
This article was written for those people who are looking for all the storage without any of the commitment. Avoid the registration forms, avoid the hassle, avoid ending up inside of a weird backend of a website with a personal profile you never wanted, where you must choose your fate, and avoid giving out personal information, especially an email address and phone number.
The review of these websites are fairly brief and to the point, to explain how they look and what they do. For any website that had optional registration, I did not sign up, as I wrote this article for that very reason: avoiding the signup and registration process, specifically to avoid giving out my email address.
