How Much Do Top Tech CEOs Make Compared To Their Employees?
As you might expect, it pays to be a Chief Executive Officer of a large corporation. The average pay for a CEO in the UK is £93,285 per year – however that is a far cry from the paycheck’s for the CEOs of Silicon Valley where the big bucks are made.
Since 1978, CEO pay has increased by a whopping 937% and the typical worker’s compensation grew a tiny 10.2% over the same period of time. Dealing with such a huge pay gap is it wrong that the Chief Executive of a successful company is paid hundreds of times the salary of his or her average employee? Or are technology CEO positions demanding enough, requiring a portfolio of highly specialised skills, to deserve such high paying salaries? The home of business ecards, eCard Shack, compared some of the top tech CEO salaries to average worker’s pay to reveal the huge difference in take home salaries.
It may, or may not, come as a surprise that some of the largest businesses and corporations on the planet are victims of the biggest salary differences: culprits include Google, Oracle, Salesforce and IBM. The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai, made a whopping $100.6 million in total compensation last year. The average Google employee receives $89,000; that’s a pay ratio of 1:1130 – the difference in pay could buy the average worker 130,745 of the latest Google Pixel phones! Google is noted to have the largest CEO to worker pay gap.
But, this strategy does not apply to all technology giants. Amazon, Dell, Facebook and Apple have the lowest difference between CEO and average employee salaries. Possibly even more surprising still is that Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has a lower salary than his average employees; a measly $37,584 compared to their take home of $95,224.
So, how much more do the highest-paid tech CEOs really earn compared to their workers?
