Highly Skilled Workers Abroad
The workforce is only getting more competitive. People earning additional degrees, enhancing their resumes and more just to land some of the most basic entry-level jobs these days. Companies are getting more competitive as well. They want to not only attract the best talent, but retain them as well. And now countries are thrown into the mix.
Countries have to compete with one another for their workers. But who does it best? Using data from the United Nations and the Global Talent Competitiveness Index, Chicago-based engineering firm KDM Engineering compared the top 25 countries at attracting and retaining talent.
The break down the score into four different categories: how the country enables, attracts, grows and retains workers.
To dive deeper, KDM then went to look at which countries are the best at attracting skilled workers from their competitor countries, noting them as “top feeders.”
Switzerland took the number one spot for this. Ranked as the top country in the world at retaining talent, it also came in the top five for enabling, attracting and growing talent. Where are all of their migrant workers coming from? Germany, France, Austria, United Kingdom and the United States are the countries top feeder countries.
Other notable top contenders following Switzerland include Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States and Sweden rounding out the top five.
Countries are always looking to one up each other when it comes to attracting the best workers. This list is a great way so see who does it best.

Where do highly skilled workers go to work abroad? Which countries are positioned to attract the best of the best? Using data from the United Nations and Global Talent competitiveness index (GTCI),we compared the 25 countries that are best at attracting and retaining top talent.
Understanding the rankings
To establish an overall ranking, the GTC I assesses four factors for each country — ability to enable, attract, grow, and retain highly skilled workers.
Enable- status of regulatory and Market Landscapes and Country.
Attract- ability to attract companies and people with needed competencies.
Grow- ability to offer high-quality education, apprenticeships, and training.
Top feeders-looking only at the 25 countries on this list, we determine which countries feed the most migrants into a given destination country.
