Sitting down and studying can seem like a daunting task. If you avoid studying like the plague, then these tips are for you. Having a plan for studying along with some studying hacks will make this process easier for you. Grab a pen a paper to take notes on these seven hacks to help you improve your focus and study smarter not harder.
Employing the Pomodoro Technique
The Pomodoro technique involves taking breaks which will help you combat procrastination and maintain focus. Francesco Cirillo developed it in the 1980s. It is based on the idea of dividing work into short bursts to help give you the push to work on your tasks without feeling too overwhelmed. You will need a timer, something to write with, and scratch paper
Set a timer for twenty-five minutes and start your task. If you start getting distracted or a thought interrupts you, write it down on your scratch and immediately return to your task. After 25 mins are over, place a checkmark on your scratch paper that you’ve completed one round of twenty-five minutes. Now you can take a five-minute break. Follow these previous steps and after four rounds of twenty-five-minute work sessions, take a thirty-minute break and repeat this cycle.
Tutoring and Studying with Others
Tutoring works by giving students individualized attention, which they may lack in crowded classrooms. Also, it helps students who aren’t challenged enough and those who struggle to keep up. There are numerous tutoring sites so conduct a search for online tutoring or tutoring for your specific needs. For instance, if you are planning on taking the ACT you might search for the best ACT tutoring online. Act tutoring helps improve a student’s understanding of complex learned concepts, and it helps develop a student’s ability to critique texts, good comprehension writing skills, and articulate arguments. A student can identify areas of weakness to target for improvement. It also makes a student increase speed and efficiency. Tutoring has also been proven to encourage students to ask questions, thus improving their assertiveness.
Stop Multitasking
For you to study more effectively, you will need to eliminate disturbance while studying. Things like unnecessary web browsing, game playing, and social media will adversely affect the potency of your study sessions. Generally, multitasking will have more disadvantages than advantages; for instance, responding to texts while studying will increase the time spent learning and reduce the learning quality.
Figure Out Why You Are Procrastinating
Lacking interest in a subject, anxiety and fear of failure are many reasons students procrastinate. This vice is common among many students, and it leaves you with unaccomplished study materials and makes your studying less effective each day. As a student who wants to study more efficiently, you should figure out why you are procrastinating. When you learn the reason why you are avoiding procrastinating it will help you figure out what steps you need to take. For example, if you’re avoiding studying because you’re afraid you are going to fail anyways tell yourself that by starting to study earlier it will give you more time to process the information.
Make a Study Schedule
Try looking at your plans and deciding what priority is and what is trivial, then make a study schedule that you will strictly adhere to. Also, think about the challenging topics you have covered and dedicate much study time to the ones you found easy. Set specific goals for each study session, including the number of topics you will need to cover by the end of the study session.
Review Notes Before Doing an Assignment
Make your notes well written and sorted to make it easier to review them anytime before you do an assignment. It is essential that before you start a study session or a particular assignment, you should check your notes thoroughly and make sure you have a recap of what that particular section is all about and can complete the given assignment correctly. Reviewing your notes will help you study more effectively and remind you of important concepts learned in class.
Reteach Yourself
Try explaining the material learned in your own words as if it’s the teacher teaching. This can be accomplished when studying with your partner or when you’re on your own. Also, you can try to create quizzes for yourself as the teacher does. Think of what the teacher wants you to know and make quizzes out of them. Quizzes are a highly effective study technique.
The sections above provide seven hacks you can use to study effectively and achieve the best results. Happy studying!
