Gun control has always ignited a fierce debate. Many incidents involving firearms, especially mass shootings, have attracted nationwide debates. While many people support bringing gun ownership under restrictions, some are against it. Gun control comes with its advantages and disadvantages, which should be analyzed before concluding whether it is necessary or not.
Advantages of Gun Control
Bringing gun ownership under control will drastically reduce the incidences of crime, particularly among city dwellers. Having a readily accessible gun makes it easier to commit a crime. Areas, where it is easier to own a gun, have higher cases of suicides, homicides, robbery with violence, and other crimes.
Gun control will also help reduce mass shootings. Over the past 30 years, there have been numerous cases of mass shootings happening around the United States. A recent report by Mother Jones revealed that in around 75 percent of the cases, the guns used to carry out the mass shootings were actually acquired legally. Imposing stricter regulations on gun purchase, gun ownership, and gun shop operation may help reduce the cases of mass shootings.
Another advantage of gun control is that it can help prevent accidental injuries. In 2010, more than 600 people were killed by accidental shootings. Even more disturbing is that between 2005 and 2010, over 1,300 of the fatalities were below 25 years old. Most of these accidental injuries can be prevented by simple control measures. Such measures include installing a child safety lock and a loading indicator.
Disadvantages of Gun Control
Gun control may discredit legitimate reasons for owning firearms. There are many scenarios where people defend themselves from robbers, burglars, and other criminals because of owning a firearm. Such cases make owning a gun a beneficial thing for self-defense. Additionally, those who engage in hunting need to possess the relevant firearms to make their ventures successful.
Gun ownership is a saving factor for women under pressure from aggressive men in many situations. Women are often the target of criminals who perceive them as weaker than men. They are thus subjected to crimes like robbery much more than men. Women also suffer violence, assaults, and attacks from rapists. Having a gun helps a woman fight off such attacks and defend themselves from criminals.
In some cases, gun ownership may help citizens resist government tyranny and foreign invasion. For example, if citizens were utterly stripped of their firearms and a dictatorship regime came into power, they would be unable to defend themselves from the tyranny.
