The year 2019 will forever be remembered as the year that made the world stop with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. But more than the lockdowns and restrictions, and its massive impact on health and safety, it’s also the year that totally reshaped the way we work and made remote working a real part of the new normal. With millions of workers currently working from the comforts and safety of their homes, it has also introduced numerous challenges including realizations that will challenge established norms.
A previous study found that employees who work more than 55 hours per week are at 1.66 times higher risk of suffering from depression, and 1.74 times higher risk for anxiety. This is in correlation with a survey that indicated that 65% of people are now working longer hours than ever before while working remotely. Furthermore, another survey said that 40% of remote workers say unplugging after hours is the biggest challenge of working remotely. With all these numbers, it just means that there is now a need more than ever to support employee wellbeing initiatives and put more emphasis on a healthy work-life balance.
