Owning guns gives you the power to go hunting, enjoy your personal passion, and possibly even defend your home and family if need be. For all the power that comes with owning guns, however, also comes responsibility. Keeping them secure is crucial to safety for all involved. Knowing what to look for in a good gun safe helps you find the right one for your weapons.
UL-Listed Locks
A gun safe is only as good as the lock it has. UL-listed locks meet the highest industry standards in terms of strength and quality control. Underwriters Laboratories is a non-profit organization that puts safes through extensive testing before giving them a stamp of approval. If a safe is UL-listed, you can depend on it.
Multi-Directional Protection
Simple gun safes might only have the ability to protect their doors from being forced open in a single direction. A more advanced gun safe will have bolts not just on the door opposite the hinges but also to the top, bottom, and hinge side itself.
Fireboarding
Whether you buy from Safe & Knife Co. or someone else, get a gun safe that has fireboards on the top, bottom, and walls of its inside compartments. There are varying degrees of fire resistance among fireboards, but the better protection you can get, the more likely it is your guns would withstand a blaze consuming the structure around the gun safe.
Interior Customization
Any gun safe that lets you adapt its interior is something that can grow and change with your gun collection. Over time, the number of guns you own might change, and the sizes of them all certainly can. Make sure you can always adapt your safe to fit your current collection needs.
Re-Lockers
Any determined thief can get past the initial gun lock if they put enough time and effort into it. Re-lockers make it much harder for them to get past the first lock, however. Even if someone totally removes the original lock, re-lockers keep the bolts or bars engaged. A good safe has either an internal or external re-locker. A great gun safe has both.
A good gun safe offers protection in two different ways. First, it keeps guns out of the hands of people who have no business touching, holding, or using them. Second, it keeps guns safe from dirt, dust, and grime. Use the tips above to find one you can rely on.
