A Screaming Goat Makes Everything Better
Back in 2013, Doritos released a commercial featuring a goat during SuperBowl XLVII that would change the face of advertising in the world. The original commercial would inspire and unleash a series of commercials from other companies who wanted in on it and that led to the rise of the screaming goat.
The goat would no longer be known for eating everything, producing cheese, or milk, which are both actually delicious and more nutrient-dense than cow milk, but for its screaming, which closely resembles that of a human. Goats are known for their screaming and they do it naturally. The commercials do not dub in any human voices. Soon after Doritos, GEICO, Sprint, and DiscoverCard hired the goat to do its marketing and advertising for them.
Would we consider this copyright infringement? Absolutely not. Putting a goat in a commercial never gets old and is hilarious every time you watch it. Watch it, show it to your family and friends, re-watch it, show it to more friends. Hopefully other animals will soon receive the same kind of love in commercials too.
Did they really hire any goat? Videos of screaming goats have been passed around on YouTube since it started, though several commercials do involve actors and a goat. The goat is just good at acting and can be used as a scapegoat, if necessary. What is more awkward and hilarious at the same time than seeing a screaming goat?
Does this necessarily improve the sales of these companies? Probably. Humor sells in commercials and remain memorable and usually leads to free advertising for years to come. Read more about Why Funny Is Important In Advertising.
I wish I was getting paid to advertise these, but the commercials are just so funny that these companies get free advertising.
