During the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing, my wife, Josie, finally found her niche in the spiritual world. She started a business and during the process, we had a family emergency that did not end well, and it is ongoing, so while she was busy, I decided I would step up, knowing barely anything, and help her run her business. While it was torture and pain to learn everything, and several mistakes along the way, especially when it came to sending stuff out that was not perfect — a business starting from the ground and learning on its way up will make mistakes along the way, so our first few products — they were “presentable” and may someday be a gem as they would be rare wood art.
Nowadays, we have gotten better, and we’re trying to keep up with orders. I’m happy to support her and see her success. I’m not one to just sit around and do nothing. I need to be doing something that is helping me with some type of financial support so in case an emergency happens one day where I need to tell my boss I’ve had enough, I can do so comfortable. Well, my wife came to me one day, and said, “You’re always so busy, I’m bored.” I said to her, “Is there a million dollars in your bank account yet? Are you able to take a day off without worrying about how you’re going to pay your bills? Can you take a vacation any time you want? Are you out of debt? If you’re bored, then by all means, quit your job and enjoy your life. Otherwise, you got to go to work or find a way to bring in revenue for your financial support.” She never stopped working a day since and has worked on getting several businesses off the ground.
At times, she failed. At times, she had no support from me, as I was busy trying to find my own successes. Finally, although it cost quite a bit in the beginning and I just saw her wasting money along the way, I just didn’t care anymore and let her do her own thing. If she was going to fail, she’d at least know that maybe it was not for her. When you have passion and pride in the thing you do best, you cannot fail. And thus, she opened up an Etsy Shop, Black Ridge Co. I never once thought: I should tell her to give up on this. I did not stand in her way. I just wanted her to keep going. If she felt this was her calling, then who was I to stand in her way?
In her previous businesses, it nearly cost us our relationship, but at the same time: it was helping her and me to find the things we enjoyed doing in our lives. While she has her business and I have mine, we do try to help each other at times, and while her business may take more attention away from me focusing on mine, the fact that she is reaping the rewards of her success could not make me happier. I’m very pleased with her, even if she didn’t succeed, I was just happy to see her try and so passionate about something, and fortunately… you’ll see her passion in her work.
