Is Work Study Possible?
Can college and work go together or should the two be mutually exclusive? If you’re a student thinking of holding down a job or a full-time professional considering further study, there are certain trade-offs you’ll have to weigh up.
Do you want to earn extra cash to afford your studies or do you need to focus solely on college assignments? Can you gain an advantage by working during college term when many others aren’t or is there simply no room for downtime with family and friends? By taking on a part-time job to earn money, are you cutting off your nose to spite your face by making yourself ineligible for educational grants that are only available to unemployed students?
As this infographic from Study Medicine Europe shows, it is possible to combine work and study, but you will need to choose your options carefully so that the balance is manageable. If you’re studying full-time, make sure that any jobs you get are with an employer who is appreciative of the time you need for college. If you work full-time and you want to try a new course, have a discussion with your boss to see how the arrangement can be managed. It will be challenging but it’s not impossible.
