One of a lawyer’s most important decisions is what area of the law to practice and focus on. If you’re in law school or considering becoming a lawyer, follow along as we explain a few popular areas of the law to consider for your legal career below.
Civil Law
Civil law is one of the most popular areas of the law. Civil law is the legal practice between private citizens outside the criminal legal system. Some examples of civil law cases include a person suing another for damages to their car after a collision, contract disputes, or even class action cases. Civil law makes up the vast majority of all cases, so there’s plenty of work for lawyers to find.
Criminal Law
The other common practice specialty for lawyers is criminal law. We’re all familiar with the basics of criminal law when the government charges individuals for crimes. Lawyers can also practice as a prosecutor or district attorney on the other side. If you’re interested in the areas of law surrounding the criminal justice system, this is the legal career to consider.
Personal Injury Law
Personal injury lawyers are also common as they focus on legal issues related to a person claiming they sustained physical or psychological damage from another’s negligence or intentional actions. Workplace injury and medical malpractice cases are common in this area. If you’re interested, you’ll want to learn the history of medical malpractice in the US to fully understand the law currently and how it affects your clients.
Environmental Law
If you are passionate about the environment, environmental law is an excellent opportunity to combine your passions with your legal career. Environmental law mostly deals with transnational, federal, and state laws, treaties, and statutes regarding preserving natural resources. Attorneys in this field typically work with advocacy organizations, nonprofits, or government agencies.

Civil rights law is another field that attracts many as it allows attorneys to argue their passions for important matters such as constitutional rights, discrimination, voting, and much more. This area of the law focuses on individual liberties and governmental powers, and lawyers often argue on behalf of nonprofit organizations, public interest firms, and other large law firms.
Employment Law
As one could guess, employment law deals with the relationship between employer and employee and the advantages of the former over the latter. Examples of cases in employment law include discrimination, sexual harassment, unlawful terminations, and workplace safety.
