Challenge of the Week: Avoid Facebook
Facebook is one of the best social media tools around and is very popular amongst many people of all ages. It allows you to connect with your friends, keep in touch with your past, and stay up to date with current events, not just in your friend’s lives, but allows you to share your own current events with all of your friends. It is this type of information that creates an addiction to the very website itself, and while it is not an issue if you are checking it once a day, it does become an issue when Facebook becomes your addiction, and you are not only checking it more than once a day, but you are logging into Facebook while at work and checking it there, too.
When it comes to Facebook activities, there is a time and a place for everything, and work is definitely a place where, if you know you cannot control yourself while at work, you should download an Extension, Plugin, or Application that specifically blocks websites and prevents you from viewing Facebook while at work.
I published an article in the past about Sharing Your Work Life on Facebook, in which employees have been fired for sharing too much information on Facebook. I know someone personally who is no longer allowed to teach in her state for proudly posting a “before and after” photo of herself, after losing weight and toning her body, but her job did not see it that way, rather they saw someone as posting semi-nude photos. There was nothing that could be done, as the evidence was right there, even after it was taken down, it was already too late and the school had a printed page record of it.
For those of you who do not use Facebook at all, this will be an easy challenge for you. If you do use a specific social media platform, however, your challenge is to avoid it for this week.
This challenge is meant to bring about the awareness of the dangers of posting too much information on Facebook and publicly on the Internet, which fully exposes you to your employer.
If your employer does not mind you being on Facebook while at work, than by all means, continue doing what you are doing, though this week, your challenge is to avoid Facebook. In fact, extend the challenge to not just avoiding Facebook while at work, but prevent yourself from checking it while at home. Take a vacation from Facebook this week, log out, and block the website completely.
While I certainly don’t condone Facebook and I do use it myself, mostly to keep in touch with family and friends who live out of state, and share a few articles or YouTube videos, the idea is to get control of your own habits and know that you do not need Facebook in order to function in your everyday life. There will be no Facebook this week. This is your challenge.
Let us know in the comments if you survived life without Facebook this week and how you felt about avoiding it! If you gave in, let us know that too!
