What Do You Do Here?
You ever tend to notice there are some people in the office who seem to do nothing all day? In fact, they are so good at doing nothing, you don’t understand how no one notices that they are never really working. You can’t help but feel they are just there to get paid for being a physical body in the room. Not that it is any of your business, as you know that when you go to work, you start your job, you have a series of tasks to complete, you have deadlines to meet, you are far too busy to really make conversation for too long, though you may slack off and watch a YouTube video here and there, maybe a text to your friend. Other than that, you tend to focus on yourself and your work, but sometimes, you just can’t help but wonder why certain people are there.
Have you ever wondered what some your co-workers do if they are not doing the same job as you? Maybe your boss? Or that guy down the hall that says hi to you every time he passes by, and then he goes into an office all day, and doesn’t come out until its lunch time or time to go home? But you don’t really know what he actually does? It always seems like there are some people in the office who do nothing all day, but just get paid to show up to work.
It is probably not true that no one in the office is not doing anything, as everyone who is hired by a company will have certain tasks to perform and higher-ups who are watching everyone and ensuring jobs are done, deadlines are met, which is measured on some sort of metric which comes up in review at the end of the year. Sometimes, however, you might even ask that person to do something for you, and you have to pull teeth, even though you know they know it is their job to do what you have asked. Yet, they will make every excuse, take forever on doing something, as if they were busy with something else? Maybe they are busy with something else and you just don’t really know what they do or what they are doing. After all, if you didn’t hire them, and they didn’t volunteer the information to you, except their job title, than you couldn’t possibly know what they are doing with their time at work.
There are other people who have jobs that seem to be worthless and meaningless, and so easy, that you could probably take over their job, while still doing your own job, except of course, you would like your salary and their salary combined. That would be awesome, wouldn’t it?
Whether you are in an office with less than ten other people or five hundred people, there is someone doing something and that is what they were hired to do. Most companies are usually efficient in knowing who and who is not pulling their weight, though there are plenty of bosses who tend to look the other way, and while they do notice it, they ignore it completely, thus leading to many employees getting away with doing an hour or two hours of work in eight hours of time.
Whatever the case may be, keep doing your job, because the moment you start slacking, someone will notice, you will get reprimanded, or worse, fired, all while the other employees who do nothing, remain untouched and unnoticed. Welcome to the workforce!
