Find Out What Has The Most Weight In Research Writing
Research writing is an essential element of any academic career. Irrespective of what stream a person chooses, academic writing is bound to be an integral part of his/her course. School and college students nowadays are expected to write papers and essays on a variety of topics – all of which require extensive research. Once the studies are over, professionals are expected to use their research and writing skills in their real-world projects and tasks. This has brought an important question to the fore: do academic positions and personal novelties have any weightage when it comes to writing a research paper? The answer is not as straightforward as it seems.
Experts believe that neither an academic position nor personal novelty has more or less importance in research writing. The argument is that if a person holds a higher academic position, he automatically commands authority on the subject that he specializes in. He must have projected heavy knowledge about a particular topic, which in turn, must have contributed to his elevation as a senior professor in a university. But, this does not mean that he has a better say in that specific topic.
On the other hand, if a person, who does not hold a higher academic position, but has a number of experimental papers to his name which have contributed to the base of human knowledge, he can be considered an authority on that specific topic. Position and knowledge have to go hand in hand; they are basically of no vital importance individually in research writing. Additionally, the problem with personal novelty is that since the normalization has not been set, experimentation has high chances of going wrong.
In order to understand this difference, and the factors that are involved in understanding if a person has authority in any given topic, the following pointers can be considered:
Demonstrate Knowledge
Just holding a senior position in a varsity hardly helps if the person does not have any publications or theses to his name. The first step, therefore, should be to create as much research content as possible. However, individuals must be cautious while developing research papers because if readers perceive the research work as sloppy, then they will hardly anticipate or mind their future works. This will act against the ultimate quest for being an authority. Research is serious business, and one that is closely watched by experts in that area. The veracity of the information in a paper is of the highest importance.
Students planning to be master paper writers can concentrate on reading as many scientific and academic college papers as they can. For a writer, reading more and more work on a single or different topics can help in expanding knowledge. This not only aids in referencing but also improves the overall work.
Publish More Papers
As mentioned earlier, individuals should focus on publishing more papers. Of course, experimenting with new ideas and providing a new perspective on a popular subject is appreciated, but if the research is of low quality, no one will pay attention. Researchers may also tarnish their reputation if any of the facts or results they stated is refuted by an external source.
The biggest advantage of more publications is that one can cite from it as much as one wants in all the future works. For example, if a person has a thesis by his name which has been cited by a lot of publications and other researchers, he automatically builds an authority on that topic.
Get Recognized by a Journal or a Committee
One other way to evince authority is to submit research papers to online journals or committees. A lot of factors such as authenticity, research level, findings, and relevance are considered when a paper is submitted to a journal. For example, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a New York-based association which analyzes a research paper’s technicality to understand if it can be included in their journal.
Individuals wanting to get recognized by a committee in their field can read all the guidelines before submitting. There’s no point in submitting a paper if it does not satisfy the basic requirements.
Plagiarism is highly frowned upon in the research paper world, so individuals should check if their papers have any content that is sourced from another published paper.
In conclusion, it is best to consider academic position and personal novelty as two different things that affect research paper writing only when they are together. A senior chancellor of a university with no publications to his name is different from a lecturer who has a handful of well-research papers to his name. Unlike politics, research writing only checks the merit and that alone.
