World Wide Web – Then and Now

World Wide Web has now become an integral part of our existence. Right from the time, we wake up in the morning until the time we go to the bed; World Wide Web plays a major role in many of our activities- communication, shopping, work, and entertainment. There are people who start their day by checking the Facebook status on their smartphones. However, it was not the same during the initial years of World Wide Web. It took a lot for Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of World Wide Web, and other major contributors- to give World Wide Web its present identity and an authoritative position. While much has been written on the Arpanet to Internet to World Wide Web over the net, it is the time to get acquainted with what happened after the World Wide Web was finally released as the royalty-free platform that didn’t need any permission.

World Wide Web – in its true sense

In order to ensure that the World Wide Web is not limited to a proprietary product, Tim, along with several other influential figures ensured that the CERN should release the principal code publicly. Anyone would use the code without paying any royalty ever. In April 1993 marked a real, practical revolution in the way the world communicates when CERN finally agreed on the demands.  The WWW code was not confined to a specific expert fraternity but was fully accessible to the public and instead of guarding; the people were invited for participating and experimenting with the same.

The global connection

The royalty free distribution of internet and its decentralized approach connected a huge number people to the WWW and by 1995 a whopping 18957 people were using the internet. It was in April the same year when another form of Media- Television- shook hands with the internet. Rox became the first TV series of the world to be distributed through the web.

Increasing the influence

• In 1997, AOL launched the first messenger for MS windows that added to the chat experience. In 1999 the widespread popularity of mobile phones added a new phase in the development of World Wide Web when Japan’s NTT Docomo introduced world first phone that was fully capable for the internet.
• With the launch of Wikipedia in 2001, internet offered a useful resource for educational purpose. Many students relied on Wikipedia for their research projects. The lifting up of various restrictions like citing the information or using the graphical creatives allowed the students and other non-commercial users to use Wikipedia as their preferred source.
• In 2002 Friendster brought a milestone evolution in the social connectivity that was later to be termed as social media. Following the example, several other online networks were developed for specific purposes like LinkedIn, and Skype.
• The Facebook was launched in 2014 that adopted a number of innovative ideas and acquired some of the already running successful social media platforms. That almost eliminated the competitions and boosted the confidence of the Facebook. Today social Medias synonymous with face book.
• Though internet had by now developed into a thriving society it still lacked a major thing- its win currency. The response came in the form of Bitcoins. Also known as cryptocurrency it can be called the digital currency used by the internet.

Lets Look Back – The Evolution of WWW

As we are all set to celebrate the world web day, the digital air seems to be filled with nostalgia. An avalanche of of memories is triggered and the scnes from yesteryears seem “oh-so-fresh” ! Right from annoyance at dial-up disconnectivity till facebook becoming popular medium to contact with foreign relatives and global friends- everything seems to beckon us. So, the best way to celebrate the eve of the world web day would be to dive deep into a digital pond of memories!

Ready, Steady, Jump…..

1969 US Department of Darpa (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) created Apranet.

University of California was connected with The Stanford Research Institute over the net.

1972 A Cambridge Mass computer scientist, Roy Tominson invented Electronic Mail.

The first International Conference on Computer Communication was held in the month of October. It was held in Washington DC and the attendees were invited to see the live demonstration of ARPANET.

1973 Second meeting of International Packet Network Working Group (INWG) took place in the month of June in New York.

Vint Cerf-Father of Internet Arpanet added 35th user to its database. In the month of September Arpanet had 43 computers that were connected to 36 nodes.

1976 Apple is founded by Steve Jobs along with his namesake Steve Wozniak. Jobs sold his Volkswagen bus to start his entrepreneurial journey while Wozniak had to part with his scientific calculator.

1978 Gary Thuerk – A marketing manager working with a US computer manufacturer sends first spam email. It was sent to around 600 Arpanet users. The unsolicited mail offered the recipients a product demo.

1979 “Of course you know I agree with all the current administration’s policies -).” Kevin Mackenzie, an Arpanet user first uses the emotion -) It represented “Tongue in Cheek”

1980 Apple IPO launched with the impressive market cap of 1.7 billion pounds

MUD became the first online game when it was connected to Arpanet

1981 The total number of Arpanet and other network users cross the threshold of 2000

IBM launched the first personal computer in August, with model number 5150. It was designed under the guidance of Don Estridge

1982 Computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University Scott Fahlman made emoticons more expressive by proposing smiley emotions 🙂 and serious ones 🙁

1985 America Online was launched Quantum Computer Services offered its first online service Q-Link

1986 A network was created by US National Science Foundation aimed at linking the existing university supercomputer networks.

1989 Sir Tim Berners-Lee employed internet as a medium to establish communication between HTTP client and Server

1990 ARPANET closes its operations.

A student Alan Emtage created the very first search engine by the name of Archie

1991 The internet saw its first major liberty when the commercial restrictions on Internet was lifted

CERN releases World Wide Web Software

Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee introduced first WWW by putting CERN’s website online. The address was info.cern.ch.

1992 The total number of Internet hosts crossed teh milestone of 10000000 figures

World’s first audio/video broadcasts released

1993 National Centre for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) developed a simple and user-friendly browser that was launched with the name Mosaic

1994 Some major search engines launched-Infseek, WebCralwer, go.com, and Lycos

Internet Banking was first introduced in America by Stanford Credit Union

A next level search engine is launched- AltaVista. It included unlimited bandwidth and offered advanced features like search tips and allowing natural language queries

The world saw first World Wide Web Worm

A revolutionary web directory Yahoo is launched

1995 Internet Explorer or IE, a graphical web browser was launched by Microsoft

French-born Iranian American entrepreneur Pierre Omidyar launched Ebay-initially an auction site

Jeff Bezos launched online marketplace Amazon

The total number of live websites reached 18957

In April World’s first TV series Rox was distributed through web. It was a small public access program that ventured online with Global Village Idiots-its first episode series

2007 iPhone was launched by Apple selling 4 million iPhone in first 24 hours iPlayer launched by BBC

2008 Chrome and Spotify were launched by Google. App Store was launched by Apple.

2009 In January Bitcoin Network was launched. It is actually a digital medium of exchange or cryptocurrency.

Satoshi Nakamoto mined the first block of bitcoins
