How Important Is Cyber Security For Americans?

Cyber attacks are one of the biggest threats facing businesses today. In 2017, several large-scale breaches affected major corporations, from Equifax to Instagram to Gmail. The proliferation of these high-profile hacks, however, doesn’t negate the very real threat facing small businesses. In fact, according Verizon Data Breach Report, 61 percent of breach victims in 2017 were businesses with under 1,000 employees.

The takeaway is simple: cybersecurity preparedness must be top-of-mind for every business regardless of size.

This is especially true given the role human error and negligence plays in cybersecurity vulnerabilities. According to a recent study from the Ponemon Institute, negligent employees and poor password policies were the main causes of data breaches. In fact, 59 percent of respondents said they don’t have visibility into their employees’ password practices.

This is especially concerning considering how negligent Americans are when it comes to digital security. According to a recent password security study conducted by Varonis, most Americans aren’t following best password practices. For example, 57 percent of Americans remember their passwords through memorization, despite the fact that strong passwords should be complex and not reused. If your business doesn’t have strict cybersecurity policies in place, these poor cybersecurity habits could spell disaster.
