Taking A Career Break
Stress is no laughing matter. It can cause a number of health problems, leave us without the energy to do the things we love, and throw our careers off track. So, what’s a stressed out worker to do?
You need a career break, and fast.
Taking a Career Break
First off, what is a career break? Career breaks are extended breaks from work, generally one month at least, with some lasting more than a year. These breaks can be used for skill development, travel, pursuing a side project, or anything you want.
While career breaks can be expensive, they’re actually feasible for many people as long as some careful planning is done. Follow these quick pointers to get started:
- Crunch some numbers: Add up your monthly expenses, minus any services you can pause, and estimate the number of months you’re going to be gone. Make sure you set aside enough money to cover your recurring expenses and have extra money for travel, food, and living.
- Take care of dependents: If you have anyone depending on you, either bring them along on your break or make sure you have someone to care for them. If you have young children, you may consider taking them along. Again, factor this into your travel costs if you plan on traveling!
- Set a goal: Your career break, even a lengthy one, will go by quickly. Make sure you have a clear goal in mind. Do you want to remove stress? Master a skill? See new places? Plan everything around your goal to ensure you don’t waste your precious break!
These tips should have you on the right path to planning your break in no time. Now, it’s time to determine what kind of break is right for you. To make things easier, here’s an infographic from Bestow that breaks down how to take a career break.
