Stress awareness month: Study reveals the most chilled-out UK cities for stressed Brits
April is Stress Awareness Month and is a time to raise awareness on stress’s negative impact and educate people on how to manage stress in their lives.
With this in mind, PayingTooMuch has analysed and ranked the most relaxing cities in the UK based on various metrics, including noise and light pollution, the number of walking trails, and the quality of life and green space to reveal the best cities for stressed Brits wanting to chill-out.
The table below shows the ten most chilled-out cities in the UK:

The key findings:
Durham is ranked the most chilled-out and relaxing city in the UK, with 37 walking trails and 11 parks and has the eighth-lowest noise and light pollution score of all UK cities (37.5).
Inverness is crowned the second most chilled-out city in the UK, with the lowest population density of all cities in the index (3,200 people per square mile) and traffic index score (101/200).
Edinburgh ranks as the third most chilled-out city in the UK – although population density is high (11,000 people per sq mile), the city provides a huge 137 walking trials and 77 parks.
Some other key findings that may be of interest:
Sydney is ranked the most chilled-out city in the world, offering 681 walking trails and 917 parks, the highest of all global cities in the index.
Vienna comes second as the most chilled-out city in the world, with the lowest noise and light pollution score (31/100) and high-quality green spaces and parks (84/100).
Melbourne ranks as the third most chilled-out city in the world, with a very low population density of just 194 people per square mile and higher-than-average happiness scores (1,527/2,000).
