If you are looking for a rewarding career that combines your desire to help others with your interest in various types of sciences, you may be thinking about becoming a pharmacist. This can be a rewarding and lucrative career path, but there may be more involved than meets the eye. These are some of the more important things that you should be aware of before enrolling in a pharmacological program in college.
Liability Insurance
Pharmacists are exposed to potential liability issues on a daily basis, and they are generally required to maintain liability coverage. Minimum coverage may be set by the state or by the employer. In some case, the cost of liability insurance falls on the pharmacist. However, some employers will provide this coverage.
Reporting and Compliance
Pharmacists are required to maintain compliance with extensive regulations. These regulations may change from time to time, and the pharmacist is required to stay updated about these changes. In addition, various types of compliance reports are required, but some tools and programs are available to assist with report generation and filing. For example, you may find solutions for aggregate spend reporting for the Life Sciences industry.
Extended Work Hours
Many pharmacies are open every day of the week, and they may have extended hours to better meet the needs of customers and patients. For example, a pharmacy located inside a grocery story may be open for several hours after evening rush hour on weekdays. Most pharmacies are closed on holidays, but there are exceptions. For example, if you work in a hospital pharmacy, you may be scheduled to work at any time of day year-round.
Many Job Opportunities
When most people think about a career as a pharmacist, they think about working in an environment that they are familiar with. For example, the idea of working in a grocery store pharmacy may come to mind. However, pharmacists also work in drug stores, specialized compound pharmacies, hospitals and several other settings. In addition, opportunities are found in larger and smaller communities across the country.
While there is more to working as a pharmacist than meets the eye, many of these factors apply to other careers as well. For example, many industries are heavily regulated and have strict reporting standards. When deciding which career path to pursue, pay attention to what your daily work experience will be like, how rewarding the profession may be and if it is suitable for the lifestyle that you want to enjoy.
