To weld two pieces of metal together, weld rods (6011 and 6013) of filler metal are used. The materials used in welding are similar to those used in welding rods, and the wires used in welding are identical to metal wires. Welding rods can be divided into two categories.
Consumable, and
Non-consumable
Durable rods are consumed during welding. MIG welding uses continuous rods, whereas TIG welding uses non-consumable rods. TIG welding uses inert tungsten gas (TIG).
Welding Processes and Types of Cast Iron
A welding process can be followed in different ways. Before welding, it is essential to identify the type of cast iron or the material. Other types of cast iron have different welding properties, such as –
White iron: This is a cast iron that can hardly be welded
Ductile iron: Since it is expensive and time-consuming to weld, this iron is rarely used.
Gray iron: It is a rugged cast iron but the most commonly welded type of cast iron.
Malleable iron: Welding alters the properties of this metal, so it cannot be welded.
The next step is to choose the welding process based on the welding material. The following welding procedures are available:
TIG welding:
The tungsten electrode is heated with a pointy arc during this welding process. Electrodes are not consumed during the welding process. Due to the metal deposits from the melting rod, the small size TIG Welders are not required to manage the heat.
MIG welding:
Beginners often choose MIG welding as their primary welding process. Using it to repair cast iron can be a great solution. It is a solid wire electrode welding technique in which a welding gun is used to operate the electrode. The welding process is suitable for joining different materials together. Inert metal gas is used during the welding process.
Arc/Stick welding:
Using suitable welding rods can make this process the best for welding cast iron. The method of fusing two distinct metal bodies via electricity is easily achievable. By using electricity, heat is created, which melts the metal.
How to Select a Good Welding Rod
A wrong move while welding cast iron can lead to a dangerous scenario and crumbles the whole structure. With the proper welding, your cast iron will look new and fresh while maintaining its strength. Checking the following attributes is necessary when choosing a welding rod:
- Tensile strength
- Ductility
- Corrosion resistance
- Weld position
- Base metal
- Polarity
- Current
- Presence of Graphite
It is advisable to use graphite-rich flux when welding rods are used since graphite binds chemically to carbon in the cast iron. The migration of carbon from the cast iron into the weld metal is thus limited. Standard cast-iron rods usually consist of a cast-iron rod and a cast iron rod, and a rod.
Nickel welding rods: Nickel welding rods contain 99% nickel. Cast iron welding requires this rod, which is very expensive. When cast iron is soft and malleable, it can be welded with pure nickel.
Ferro-Nickel welding rod: Made of 47% nickel and 53% steel, this welding rod is inexpensive.
What Kind of Welding Rods Should You Use on Cast Iron

45% iron and 55% nickel mix rod:
The cast iron looks similar to this after welding and is very affordable. The weld can be machined, but it’s more complicated than with a pure nickel rod.
Pure nickel rod (99% nickel):
Cast iron is a good material for welding with this rod. Using the welding rod can make the iron supple and machineable, as well as lessen cracking. The rod is, however, very expensive, which is why welding professionals usually avoid using it.
Stainless steel rod:
Your metal’s properties can be changed by stainless steel welding rods. Temperature changes can cause this steel to shrink or expand, leading to the development of cracks.
Iron rod:
Rods made of the iron-nickel mix are cheaper than those made of the iron-nickel blend. However, they produce a variety of colours when welded. Due to their shrinkage, they are pretty challenging to use. Welding causes them to become rigid, making them difficult to machine.
Brazing bronze rod:
This rod is compatible with the IG welder. Welding rods reportedly increase the strength of joints or crack support in joints. Cast iron is not damaged, and its properties are not altered by welding rods.
On cast iron, these five welding rods are the most commonly used, and all of them perform relatively well.
