I am an executive assistant to a chief justice, which simply means that I work closely with the chief justice and with other lawyers. I am not a law student, but instead, a Psychology student. However, I think I was destined for this job, as I love it.
What I normally do is read the cases to my boss. He’s old and he doesn’t want to read, so he lets me read the cases and can you just imagine how thick the pages that I have to read aloud? However, as I read and proofread at the same time, I learn a lot from the cases that I read. Aside from this, we are based on different places in the country and from there I met a lot of people especially in the court.
It is a great job because I really learn a lot from it, the experience is different. Coming from a person who never thought of getting into law or anything that is related to it, I can say that it is such a big surprise that I am really enjoying the experience.
Back then, I am really not interested in the law. I hate watching the news, reading the newspapers, etc. because I hate the violence that I see there. I don’t even know how some laws work. But when I got into the job, I felt like a CIA agent or a lawyer from Suits.
Whenever I walk side by side by the chief justice, I feel as important as him. Being the executive assistant, I get to be with him all the time. I get to sit with him while he’s on a meeting with important people, I get to come with him on all his travels, I get to talk to people who are highly important and they know me.
It’s not just the feeling of importance that I love about the job, although it is great because I get to use my influence sometimes. But it is the excitement that I get from it. My boss is very brilliant and he is really full of wisdom. You will really be left with your mouth gaping open when he makes a decision on a certain case or when he makes comments because his comments or opinions are the ones that you don’t see coming, and it will really surprise you.
Another thing that I love about my job is, as much as they say that politics is dirty and corrupt, I can say that we are not. I’ve seen men trying to bribe my boss to let the case go, but he would always say no and we will always proceed on the process. And that enlightened me a lot.
My personal work experience has been nothing but great. Even though there are some problems, disappointments, frustrations, I don’t think there is a job that doesn’t have that. Right now, I am very lucky to have this job and I am slowly developing a passion for it.
