There’s always someone online, or a loved one telling parents what’s best for them to do (or not do).
One of the most important aspects of parenting is determining the right language to use with children. But, what do parents in America actually adhere to in their homes? A new study is revealing how parents use language with their kids and the impacts it has.
Key findings:
A majority of parents in the U.S. describe their parenting style as authoritative.
The most popular parenting styles among American parents are lighthouse, attachment, and gentle parenting.
Younger generations are more likely to identify with gentle parenting than older generations as Gen Zers and millennials often view other generations’ parenting styles as overly negative.
- A significant 20% of parents say they regret language they have used with their children.
- When reflecting on their childhood, 61% of Americans wish their parents used language in different ways with them.
A notable 43% are conscious of using gender-stereotyped language with their children.
