Keeping your AR-15 clean and properly maintained is an important part of owning a firearm. It not only ensures that the weapon will continue to function properly, but it also helps ensure that the gun is safe to use. Cleaning your AR-15 may seem intimidating at first, but once you know the basics it’s a relatively simple process. In this blog post, we’ll cover everything you need to know about cleaning your AR-15.
Gather Your Supplies
Before you begin cleaning your AR-15, it’s important to make sure you have all the necessary supplies. These include a cleaning rod, cotton patches or cloths, lubricant, degreaser, bore brush, and cleaning solvent. Once you’ve gathered all these items, move on to step two.
Disassemble Your AR-15
The next step is to disassemble your AR-15 so that you can access all of its parts for cleaning and lubrication. This includes removing the BCG (bolt carrier group) from the upper receiver and then taking apart each piece of the BCG as well as any other components that will require cleaning or lubrication. Make sure to refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on how to safely disassemble and reassemble your specific model of firearm. If you have questions, consult a professional such as Tombstone Tactical.
Clean All Parts Thoroughly
Once all the parts are disassembled and ready for cleaning, it’s time to get started! Begin by using a bore brush with cleaning solvent or degreaser on it to scrub away dirt and debris from each component of your gun. Use a cotton patch or cloth soaked in solvent or degreaser on stubborn spots if necessary. Once all parts are thoroughly cleaned, be sure not to forget any small springs that may have been removed during disassembly! Finally, wipe down all components with a dry cloth before moving on to step four.
Lubricate All Parts Properly
Once all parts are clean and dry it’s time for lubrication! This is an important step because proper lubrication helps keep moisture out of your gun while also helping ensure smooth operation when firing. Refer back again to your owner’s manual if needed in order to determine which type of lubricant should be used for specific components of your firearm such as triggers and bolts carriers etc. Apply the lubricant sparingly; too much can cause build-up over time which can lead to problems down the line.
Cleaning an AR-15 rifle isn’t difficult once you understand what needs to be done—but understanding those steps is key. Gather up all necessary supplies before beginning in order to make sure nothing gets missed during disassembly as well as during reassembly afterward. When done properly this process should take no more than an hour per month for even novice shooters—which means less time spent worrying about maintenance and more time spent shooting!
