Blame it on my utter lack of professional practicability or plainly on my gullibility but I had, by far, the worst first job experience ever!! Well, I might say it’s fairly understandable since that was my first job right after I graduate but nothing could have prepared me for the massive drama, responsibility and the need to gag myself that awaits for me in my first job.
Yep, I was a virgin alright. I was inexperienced, gullible, and very naive to be hired for such a daunting task. I prefer to not spare you on details so I was hired as an account executive in DHL. I should have taken heed from all the signs right from the start but I was too bold and too daring to ignore them. Having been hired in a very crucial position in a very reputable company gave me the blind audacity to carry on and be dismissive of the pressure that would come my way.
But before anything else, let me first tell you what does job entail. It was my duty to do marketing for the company so I have to be very careful with my sales quota. I have to make regular maintenance calls to our regular clients and make fact finding calls to new prospective clients. I also have to make a sales pipeline to update and monitor all of my prospective, new, and regular clients.
This was not so much of an intimidating job for me. In fact, from the moment I accepted this job and up to this time, I had full confidence that I am able to pull this job off. What just bothered me is the culture and the whole working environment that I have to deal with every single day of my working life while I was still employed there.
You might be wondering about the signs that I ignored. Well, I was told that I’m too skinny and too shy-looking to hold such an aggressive position in the company and that marketing actions should always be done by a strong and willed young man. He was wrong on some parts though. Yes, I was too skinny before but I had the fire to work. In fact, it turned out, he quit during his two year employment in the company. I wonder maybe because he was not too aggressive enough to stay in the fierce commercial completion.
Now, the workplace is as dirty as the people in it. I do not mean to represent the company itself but I just plainly hate how those people work! In fact, I was the only fresh graduate there who still had that ideal mold of how a perfect career woman should be and it definitely did not appear in the said workplace. What’s worse was that our manager was the most stupid and the most unintelligible manager I have ever met! She has always let me do her work which is a burden for me since I also have to do my work as well.
In fact, she never did any serious work! All she cared about was maligning and insulting the people in her workplace which made her public enemy number 1. I had to literally gag myself every time I am being scolded just because her work turned out to have some flaws after I submitted them to her higher superior. That means I get to blame for her mistakes.
However, I was also not given much credit for my own accomplishments and was credited to the stupid manager just because I was “under her wing”! After all those frustrations and disappointments, I let it all out and decided to QUIT!!! The rest of the tired-looking employees followed. Until the ones that were left only stayed because they had no choice because of their educational background.
I can only look back at it with disgust and a feeling of shame for myself for having to suffer such an ordeal for five long years. Now, I am currently happy with my current job and I can only hope nothing but the hope that she, the stupid DHL manager, should at least know how to use a computer.
