Litter Is Destroying The Planet
It might come as a shock to learn that general littering has increased in Britain by 500% since the 1960’s. Much of the reason for this is the extra packaging that many of our everyday items now come wrapped in. The huge increase in the use of plastic, which is virtually indestructible under normal circumstances, has meant that much of the packaging that we regularly throw way simply stays wherever it is put.
Research from finance experts Money Guru shows that the mass increase in the use of plastic bottles alone is a problem in itself with over 38 million bottles used every day in the UK, with only half of these ending up recycled.
Chewing gum, cigarette butts and fast food containers that are regularly thrown away have created enormous floating islands of rubbish in the sea with authorities stating that a third of all fish caught around the UK coast have been found have traces of plastic in them. In this way the plastic waste easily finds its way into the human food chain.
The cost of clearing chewing gum from our streets and litter thrown from cars is enormous and bear in mind that it comes from the tax payer, that means you and me.
So, in view of this perhaps it makes sense to make an extra effort to avoid plastic, opting instead for reusable long-life bags and recyclable paper containers and making an extra effort to recycle every item that we can correctly. After all we only have one earth to live on.
