Whether you know it or not, Twilight Zone has a staple in Hollywood and continues to influence books, television shows, and movies. Every year, if you are not one of those people who goes out and parties with humanity and gets drunk in celebration of a new year, a new decade, then you are not one of those people who watched the Dr. Who marathon on BBC for Christmas week and then switched over to SyFy, it is like twenty-four seven science fiction overload and it is wonderful. If you are like me, however, I stopped watching the ball drop. I stopped watching the celebrations. I stopped watching the news. I literally spend the entire two weeks watching Dr. Who and Twilight Zone.
Twilight Zone is an amazing show. Any university could literally throw up a course on Twilight Zone and it would be an introduction course trying to cover years of psychotherapy and philosophy. There are various lessons to be learned through the episodes, and while you should catch the storyline, there are various mindfucks that get you every time. From the old to the very new, Rod Serling was born to literally tell these stories, all plausible and as credible as Shakespearean storytelling. These are just some of the many lessons learned while watching Twilight Zone.
I will not give away the episodes these are from, but if you are a diehard fan, you will probably recognize the references.
- When someone tells you not to open a door, don’t open it.
- When someone tells you that they have “a beast” locked inside, and that beast cannot touch an easy-to-move iron rod, then you probably should not move it.
- Don’t let the devil out and turn your back on him.
- If aliens come to this Earth, promising us prosperity, peace, and wealth, we’re on the menu.
- If a doll tells you she hates you, it’s probably best to just leave, now.
- If you ever find yourself in a situation where Earth has become completely radioactive, trust “the old man in the cave”.
- If everyone else’s stuff is broken, but yours is not, you should probably leave.
- If you have superpowers, use them for good.
- If she seems like the perfect woman, you probably created her and can easily destroy her.
- If the devil offers you a million dollars, you should probably pay your taxes first.
- All dogs go to heaven, so if your dog doesn’t want to go, or isn’t allowed, that’s not heaven.
- You actually might be the most beautiful in the room, while everyone else is ugly.
- If a town happens to be worshipping or fearing a little boy, get out as fast as you can.
- It is probably best if you don’t sit by the window on a plane or at least, keep the shade down.
- You probably should not study to become a librarian, as you are declared to be obsolete.
- If you wear glasses, make sure you keep them on and they do not slip off, especially if all you want to do is read books.
- You’ll be safest in a bank vault during a nuclear detonation.
- If someone keeps calling you and sounds the same, but you can’t understand them, they probably loved you and are calling you from beyond the grave.
- You are always going to be happier being you, even if your life is a mess.
- Don’t be mean to your mean Uncle, especially if you know he’s probably going to leave a mean robot with your Uncle’s personality.
- Don’t be mean to your father, or take your father for granted, especially if he’s rich, and you’re spoiled.
- As a human, don’t ever think you’re a god or otherwise.
- If you say you have the money, you better have the money.
- A clock can rule your life if you let it.
- Careful what you wish for, there’s always a twist.
- You may be able to extend your life a bit longer, but you still must face death.
- You may want to be alone, but humans are all you have.
- Understand that if you are with someone, you are with them because you love them, not only what they can do for you, especially if they are older.
- If your neighbor warns you to build a bomb shelter and you don’t, don’t expect your neighbor to help you when you clearly didn’t listen to your neighbor in the first place.
- Don’t seek to be better than a legend, especially if it means you will have to constantly defend your title, even in death.
- Don’t wish to be a ruler, one that everyone “loves”, it’s only by force, and you’ll probably end up as Hitler.
- Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
- It may be wonderful for now to hold your gold, but someday, it may have no value at all.
- When you hate, you can only live with yourself for very long.
- If you do not resolve your past, it will come back to haunt you or catch up with you.
- Just because the time has past does not mean your issues have been resolved.
- Be courteous and don’t overstay your welcome.
- If you have a chance to preserve your body and be younger, you should probably conform and do so.
- If you get a month off for vacation, don’t forget you are just a mannequin.
- Don’t be too gullible and believe everything a fortune teller reveals to you.
These are just many of the lessons learned from Twilight Zone and as we have now surpassed the year 2020, with many who did not make it through the year, and with much happening to the whole human race as a global community, we come to realize that with each passing day, the Twilight Zone is becoming more of our reality that we face. Twilight Zone serves as a great warning for what could happen to us and much of what has already happened to us. How we will use this knowledge to prepare for our impending doom or survival is up to the human race.
It is unlikely that we will ever learn from our mistakes. While a human being alone can change, adapt, and evolve, the human race is very slow to change, adapt, and evolve, or learn its lessons from the past, often repeating the same mistakes over and over until we either do something about it, learn to live with it, or pretend the pink elephant in the room is not actually there. If you have yet to see Twilight Zone, it is amazing, and even better when you accept that black and white is necessary to portray the best stories.
