Remedies for Common Illnesses
PROBLEM
I rarely ever get sick, but there are those moments where I eat the wrong thing or the common cold somehow worked its way into my system and I’m left for days without energy for days. When you get sick, there really is no cure for anything which occurs immediately. You can certainly speed up the process and ease the pain experienced, but nothing will just make the misery end immediately. Unfortunately, common colds and illnesses are a part of life and there is no cure. The best method is prevention and by prevention, it usually means avoiding people and the real world for the months cold season is prevalent — especially by constantly washing your hands and not putting them near your face during cold season.
If you have kids, you probably won’t be able to avoid anything since they will bring home everything they have and won’t hesitate to share it with you. At work, have sanitizer handy. Germs love to hang out on your mouse and keyboard since that’s where you are most of the time. Have some sanitizing wipes to clean those areas and sanitizer for your hands. Avoid shaking hands with your co-workers.
I’m not a doctor and although I’ve been to doctors when I did have health insurance, unfortunately, I currently have no health insurance and have had to find common solutions that take care of colds and illness fast. So these are some remedies that I use to deal with the pain that comes from illness or common colds.
SOLUTION
I will take anything and everything if it promises to make the pain go away and make my illness and misery end quicker. So here are some remedies that seem to work for me:
Slightly more expensive but worth the price. This is a miracle medicine, food, and tiny tablet. I’ve been taking this product for years and although it has been an on and off relationship, I keep finding myself returning to this product to improve my overall health. The recommended dosage is about 15 little tablets per day, but I only take about 2 a day. These are basically digestible algae and provide essential nutrients to remain alive. If you take the recommended dosage, they will work much faster and instead of noticing changes in a week or two, you may notice them in just a few days. I do not take the recommended dosage because they are slightly more expensive than other products and although I’ve taken the recommended dosage at one point when I first tried these, I get the same effect over time of taking 2 a day vs. 15 a day.
I do not think you could live off of these alone, but they will balance your system out. You may experience excessive bowel movements or even diarrhea when you first start taking these, but you need not be concerned: They are doing their job and cleaning your digestive system out for proper body balance. Over time, you will feel more energetic, healthier, and these will also boost your immune system so you won’t be getting sick as much.

Honey
Honey tastes wonderful and can add that extra essence to many dessert dishes. It also serves as a natural healer, antibiotic, and antiseptic. Got a cut or a burn? Rub honey on it. Slice the tip of your finger off? Put some honey on it, cover it with a bandage, and in a week, you will notice it has grown back. Add it to tea for a nice flavor and health effects on the body as well. If you are experiencing nausea or cold-like symptoms, including a sore throat, make cup of hot tea with honey and it will soothe your throat. It may also help soothe headaches and migraines.

Apple Cider Vinegar (Liquid or Pills)
This is probably the be-all-end-all of cures for everything you will ever have. Stomach Ache? Apple Cider Vinegar. Nausea? Apple Cider Vinegar. Dizziness? Apple Cider Vinegar. Diarrhea? Apple Cider Vinegar. Sore throat? Apple Cider Vinegar.
Apple Cider Vinegar alone is fine, but the taste is extremely bitter. It is especially hard for any child to swallow. If you really want to make it taste better, dilute it with honey. Add both to hot tea and drink several cups. You should begin feeling better within an hour or two.
Not only that but if you are experiencing heartburn or acid reflux, a small cup of Apple Cider Vinegar will help balance the acidity levels in body. It serves a multitude of other uses as well including fruit fly killer, flea repellant, detoxing, weight loss, aftershave, treatment of sunburn, and can even make your hair shine.

Hot Tea
You can never go wrong with any type of tea for a common cold, flu, or illness. Tea has been a favorite alongside humans for over 4,500 years, likely originating in China. It is served at dinner parties and usually offered along with coffee. It receives great recognition, having its own designated times in England. It is popular in India and China and acquiring millions of new drinkers each year in the United States. Tea tastes great, can help with weight loss, reduces stress, boosts immune system, and provides soothing hydration. There are a few teas that are better than others, such as Green Tea, Chamomile Tea, and Ginger Tea. As suggested above, add honey and apple cider vinegar with a lemon for optimal results. Apple Cider Vinegar with tea alone will make the tea bitter, while honey with Apple Cider Vinegar will add a sweeter flavor. Drink tea until you get better and continue drinking it long after.
Ibuprofen, Advil, Acetaminophen
Never ever leave home without it. While it’s not a home remedy, it will make sure you do not experience pain for long. If you prefer the gel caps, they usually take effect in under 20 minutes since they are gel and dissolve faster. If you are experiencing headaches often, you should not substitute going to see a doctor to figure out why you are getting many headaches. This is just a temporary relief. Your body may or may not develop a tolerance level and dosage increase may be required. Make sure that if you do take any of these, they do not interfere or are not harmful with any other medications. Do not take alcohol with any of these.

Echinacea
This is a plant that comes in pill form and is said to be effective in helping to prevent the common cold from getting strong or it may reduce the effects of the common cold. With this, you need to begin taking it soon as you feel a cold or illness coming on. If you wait too long, these are not as effective, but may help speed up the process of the common cold in your body.

Multivitamin
While there is controversy as to whether these are effective or not, buying from a trusted company such as Centrum could be beneficial. For Athletes or people who are more active in their day, I recommend AST Multi Pro 32X. Multivitamins provide a lot of the nutrients and nutrition that we lack in our daily diet or are not getting enough of, and provides extra energy. These little wonder pills are great to supply your body the energy it needs to fight illness.

Fruit Punch / Cranberry Juice / Apple Juice / Orange Juice = Vitamin C
Who doesn’t love juice? Vitamin C is essential. There are plenty of mixed studies that say Vitamin C is not really effective in fighting the common cold. But in fact, these juices will give your body vitamins and liquids to help it fight the common cold. While you should drink water while you are sick in order to keep hydrated, juice gives you sugar and other essentials that water cannot. Drinking juice allows you to still taste things and because it keeps you more hydrated, it should help your body fight whatever it has.
Halls
If you have a sore throat or just feel nausea, Halls will do the trick! Stick to the Menthol-Eucalyptus or Honey flavors which are the most effective in helping to ease whatever it is you have.

Cold Eeze
I would say my review on this is mixed. I think it worked, but I’m not sure if it was a combination with everything else. It is not able to prevent a cold or flu, but it is supposed to speed up the process. The maker has had several television commercials and promises that it does work or “money back guaranteed.” Nonetheless, the flavor is not bad and it focuses on the Zinc vitamin, which helps the immune system and aids it in fighting colds and viruses.

Airborne
It used to be that these came in huge tablet form and you had to drop them in water to let them dissolve. There were two flavors: Orange and Lemon. The lemon tasted okay but it was pretty nasty. It would provide your body with the essential nutrients needed for fighting a common cold. It was said that if you took it early enough, you could prevent the cold from coming. I’m not sure if it ever stopped me from getting a common cold, but it did give me a boost of energy.
That was years ago and since then, the company has developed many more products other than the large tablet. Airborne has released a tiny tablet and you take about 4 each hour. I believe it tasted like Smarties or a similar taste, a sugar candy taste to it. These were great and quite effective in providing an energy boost as well as what seemed to clear the sinuses. It probably aided in boosting the immune system to defeat my cold.

DayQuil / NyQuil
DayQuil is great for the day and will help soothe the pain from a cold. If you need to be awake, DayQuil will assist you in getting through your day. If you do not need to stay awake, it is highly recommended that you take NyQuil. NyQuil seems to be much more effective since it does contain an added ingredient to help put you to sleep . While you’re asleep, the medicine in combination with your body can help fight off the cold and have you feeling better in a few days. If you start taking NyQuil a few days before the full blown cold, you can reduce the effects of the cold or you may be lucky enough to get rid of the cold altogether.

Chicken Noodle Soup
Yes, they have done mixed research on this and said that Chicken Noodle Soup is no more effective in reducing a common cold, flu, or illness, than anything else. While this may be true, there is still nothing like chicken noodle soup during a cold. It is pretty much the only thing that still has flavor. You can eat it even if you don’t really have an appetite. It’s nice and soothing on the throat. And it does provide you with some essential nutrients including rehydration.

Sleep
Finally, the most essential byproduct of being human. Every living creature sleeps in some form or another. Why do we sleep? It is the time where our brains and our bodies are able to relax more and focus on themselves, healing, making sense of things, and generally giving you a refreshed feeling when you awake. Sleeping will help speed up the process of the common cold, a flu, or illness because the brain and body can focus mostly on giving the immune system all the power it needs to fight off the infection, viruses, colds, flu, or other illnesses.

There are plenty other remedies that can be used. There are some I have not listed, others I used to use, others I haven’t thought of, others I haven’t used in years, but there are many, many food products and medications that can help ease, prevent, or cure common ailments that occur seasonally or in everyday life.
