[Study] 55% of Americans check work messages in their free time

Work chat apps like Slack and Microsoft Teams present a challenge for work-life balance since they provide access to constant direct messaging with coworkers. A new study found that Americans are more likely to respond to chat apps than email in their free time.

Preply surveyed 1,200 Americans to learn more about their use of work chat apps and how it impacts their work-life balance.

Findings:

• 55% of Americans have a work chat app on their personal phone.
• 52% keep the apps push notifications on so messages are never missed.
• 29% feel the need to reply ASAP to messages outside of work hours.
• 29% check coworkers’ chat app status, however, those messages don’t deter people from messaging with 53% reporting messaging a coworker even if they have a busy or away status.
