Being president is an awesome job. You get to influence people and change things around for the better. There are many ways to lead as President of the United States, leading the free world, and being put in charge of one of the most powerful military presences in the history of the world.
President is kind of like being CEO of your company, but with more power. You have to get the support of others in order to succeed. It is a tall order, but it’s one that you can run if you work at it. As President, your job is to affect change in the world by getting people to listen and by having an impact on current events. You have to be able to emotionally connect with people in order to influence them, which is not always easy, considering the people you are in charge over may not like you nor did they vote for you, yet you have to push those feelings aside to realize that regardless of whether a President has their support or not, they still must be protected at all costs.
However, emotional connectedness is key when influencing others and the President must put aside differences in order to push forward in order to align with common goals amongst all the people of the nation. The President must put themselves out there in order to affect change.
Stress
Stress is a running theme in this article because it comes with the nature of the job, regardless of whether you get along with those you are working with or not. Being President of the United States is an extremely stressful job, as seen with Presidents before their run and after. It is expected that all Presidents will endure a longstanding stress, as they wake up to new events each day, new missions, new information, and must learn how to process and advise on what to do about certain situations.
The President must also have constant health checks to ensure a stable mental and physical position is ever-present to ensure that daily functions and tasks may be completed without too much difficulty. While many people go to work and take on necessary and unnecessary stress, it is simply part of the job description. Learning how to deal with stress, whether through medication or golfing, or taking multiple vacations throughout the year, is key to continuing the job.
Traveling
While traveling as President may seem fun, it is full of work and a busy schedule, often napping during travel time, while somehow managing to be updated on the current events ahead, where a President is briefed on what they are to talk about and how to handle situations, including any questions they may have to answer, and even how to present themselves.
From talking to both peaceful and dangerous world leaders to visiting places and establishing a type of presence, traveling is a busy schedule and also endures many risks that come with it, requiring the Secret Service to establish every single move made by the President, from the streets the President is allowed to be on, to the areas of buildings where the President can go.
In addition, the President and many world leaders may be very paranoid during their travels to other countries, specifically about their waste. Our DNA can tell a lot about us and acquiring what seems like a non-important piece of us can go down the toilet, the reality is that it can reveal loads of facts about health. Thus, when the President and other world leaders travel, they may urinate or poop in a toilet designed specifically not to go down a sewer, but in a container that is collected and disposed of back in the leader’s country.
A President may even be required to give several pints of blood in case of an emergency in which the President has lost a lot of blood, a transfusion of their own blood would be possible.
Time constraints
When Michelle Obama was asked if she would run for President, she absolutely detested the question, citing the fact that 8 years of her husband, Barack Obama, being President of the United States was plenty of time their family should sacrifice. Being able to watch her children grow up without the intense media pressure and focus, along with spending more time with her husband, seemed to be her top priority.
Although all Presidents kept different type of schedules, some of them starting very early in the day, while others started much later in the day, all of them are required to attend mandatory meetings, visit places, meet certain people, attend events. The life of the President of the United States is a busy one that seems almost nonstop.
In addition to the daily routine tasks, there are also many unexpected events taking place around the world that may require the President to detract his attention away from one thing, while focusing on many others. There is not much downtime as everyday, something is happening, and the President is usually required to respond or handle certain situations.
The President has the responsibility of being a great leader, having to manage a team and keep them motivated, while also working with many who are politically for and against the agenda. So at times, the President may seem incompetent or unwilling to work with others, while the truth may be that there are many who are unwilling to yield or work with the President at all.
Reading materials
If you’re President, you don’t have too much time to read newspapers, books, magazines. Although President Obama did make an effort to always read books during his time as President. Many times, the President is appointed to a teams of staffers whose primary job is to update the President on ongoing events and may even give summaries of things that should be known.
While President Donald Trump was known to spend a lot of time on the Internet, with an obsession to Twitter, Presidents before him did not spend as much time scouring and trolling the world wide web, probably due to the fact that it could present a national security issue.
If you probably asked any President what they wanted to do more of, it would probably be reading. Reading is one of the most overlooked things Presidents need to learn how to do, not only to continue expanding their knowledge, but because reading is important to do.
Presidency vs. Leadership
A President has many roles to play including Command-in-Chief, boss of over 2 million government employees, speaker, motivational speaker, conflict resolution and peacekeeper, military campaign leader, head of foreign policy, political party leader, and more, not to mention a role as spouse or parent.
The decisions a President makes are very important and can be dangerous at the same time, as choices may affect the future of the United States and the entire world. There is no decision a President can make that should be taken lightly. With a few launch codes, a President can start a conflict and a deadly war that could even be the end of the world.
This is why it is important for any President to have a good team to go to for advice and decision-making, especially being a President that is in charge of one of the most powerful and influential democracies the world has ever seen.
Power
As stated, the job of the President is a powerful one that comes with many responsibilities. There are many things the President can and cannot do. There are many things the President should and should not do. The President of the United States is seen as one of the most prestigious and power-wielding jobs by the entire world.
The President sets the course for how the United States reacts and acts towards other countries and itself, and answer the calls that the government needs a President to make. The President is also required to attend media press conferences and explain actions and decisions. In fact, after being elected President, there is a requirement to make a public appearance at least once every six months in order to show presence and power. A President can officially begin showing off power by attending domestic or international ceremonies where he or she will associate with other world leaders.
Can’t express own opinions
As the leader of the free world, a President has many duties to the country. While a President may give their thoughts and opinions to an extent, there are many things a President cannot do including expressing a true opinion. The President may be counseled on what to say and how to say it, making them almost seem as if they are not the ones really in charge.
However, as seen recently from President Obama to President Trump and President Biden, opinions and feelings of emotions have certainly been expressed and seen by the public. Many people rely on a President, who is expected to be strong and not show emotion, especially no tears. It is not always easy to do, as being human comes with an assortment of emotions, all the while a President is expected to show their humanity to the world.
Being a President is a job that requires serious self-confidence. If a President gets overwhelmed or stressed easily, it may be believed the President is unable to perform tasks and duties and may even be called upon for impeachment. However, it is important to establish a position on multiple topics so that the world may know exactly where a President stands on a particular issue.
National mourning
A President also has the job of leading a nation into proper mourning, specifically when other leaders die or there is a massive unforeseen and horrendous tragedy that has occurred, in which a President is required to help the public understand their own emotions and what has happened, along with ensuring them what can and will be done about a particular situation.
On average, Presidents may spend about a month in office celebrating their election and inaugurating their term. After that, they mostly spend time preparing for the next session of Congress and promoting themselves abroad and within their own country. This all can be tiring and stressful at the same time!
Of course, the job of President never really ends, as a President is still the representative and former leader of the free world. What a former President may do in their free time matters, although it does not mean a former President is required to step up and serve again. A former President also wants to try and help current Presidents with advice and even continuing to fight for voters as well as maintaining understanding and educating themselves on the current events of politics.
This is the life of the President of the United States and when you look deep into it, most people could never do it.
