Learning another language like Spanish has multiple benefits in a globalized world, such as achieving better professional development and opening doors to new opportunities. Foreign languages can be hard to teach, but language acquisition is possible with proper guidance and exercises. These fun and creative ways to teach Spanish vocabulary will help you as a teacher implement engaging ways to keep students interested and effectively learning the language.
Lyric Translation
Students of all ages have favorite songs from trending music bands, performers, and television shows they sing along to all the time. Choosing one of these songs and translating the lyrics into Spanish is a creative way to keep students engaged and help them learn from something they already know and love.
Students can write down the lyrics in English and then translate each verse into Spanish. This method will teach students the song’s vocabulary, which they are likely interested in. You could also consider using Spanish interactive notebooks for this activity, as they will help students organize the translated lyrics in a way that makes sense to them. Plus, if they write the vocabulary in their notes, they can keep it for later reference.
Word Charades
Understanding the meaning of a word and putting it into context is the best way for a student to remember and correctly utilize a word. Word charades will help students’ brains find the right example to express a word. Plus, a little competition is the best way to create urgency and enhance focus. Playing word charades at least once weekly will reinforce their vocabulary with new and freshly learned words.
Word Memory
Instead of the traditional memory game that makes players find two of the same image, word memory requires matching English words with their Spanish translations. Begin by cutting blank cards. Then, choose vocabulary words in English and write them down, creating corresponding cards in Spanish for each English term. After you have all the words and their translations, mix them up and put them face down. Have students flip the cards over one by one, attempting to remember where each card is and matching the words to their translations.
Bingo
Bingo is a popular game most people know because it’s a simple and fun way for everyone to join in learning. Spanish bingo requires students pay attention as you say words in English while students mark their Spanish bingo cards. This fun and creative way to teach Spanish vocabulary helps students translate vocabulary quickly and enhances their listening and reading skills.
