Negative Thoughts Affect Your Career
Work can be a grueling experience. We tend to hold pretty high expectations for ourselves these days – and in a turbulent job market, our bosses hold pretty high expectations for us, too.
It can be all too easy to concentrate so hard on work that you neglect to look out for your mental health, and wind up listening to the negative, nagging voices in your head rather than chalking up your successes as a sign that you’re on the right path.
In fact, psychologists have identified four particular negative thoughts that tend to haunt the most ambitious amongst us. Black-and-white thinking, for one, is an inability to see a middle-ground between success and outright failure. Personalizing is taking anything that goes wrong in the work place to heart – even when something’s not your fault.
Filter thinking is about seeing everything through a fug of negativity, while catastrophizing is always believing the worst possible outcome is likely to happen.
Do any of these sound familiar? Congratulations, you’re a negative-thinker! But don’t worry: by tuning up your emotional agility you should be able to get these voices under control and resume ownership of your destiny within the workplace.
And this valuable new infographic contains instructions on just how to do so. Check it out, and go easy on yourself – a little pressure can be a positive force, but stress helps nobody.
