Olivet Nazarene University recently surveyed 2,009 American workers regarding their satisfaction with their current office environment and how it contributes to their happiness and productivity at work. More and more offices are being designed with employee happiness and satisfaction in mind. The full survey asked about their views on office design, office productivity, digital distractions and working remotely.

Some of the major takeaways from the study can be seen below:

The study found that 77% of American workers are happy with the way their office is currently setup. Those who have private office reported the highest levels of happiness. 67% of employees surveyed said they are productive as they can be in their current office environment. The study also found that cubicles are no longer the most popular type of workspace layout, replaced with open floor plans which can be found in 51% of workplaces today. Thanks to technology, employees are now having more daily conversations via messaging apps rather than face-to-face interactions (9 conversations vs 8, respectively). 58% of American’s say they are less productive when working remotely. The top reasons for the loss of productivity include digital distractions, trouble signing off at the end of the day and difficulty communicating and collaborating with coworkers.

The survey also asked American employees what they need to be productive while at work. The top responses were a quiet location to work (35%), a dedicated office space (24%), a comfortable chair or desk (22%). Respondents also said that natural light, free drinks, comfortable meeting spaces, free snacks and a pet friendly policy. To see the full report check out the infographic below.
