The major reason the majority of people buy a new computer is because their old computer has slowed down to the point where it is unusable. The reason is not because the computer is old, but usually because it is filled with malware. Malware is computer software that is hidden within your computer. The computer slows down because Malware software uses a lot of memory resources. With memory resources being unavailable, your computer has nothing left to use and must attempt to try and acquire or share these resources with the malware virus. What you are left with is a slow computer.
If people don’t buy a new computer and go to get it repaired, it will cost them quite a bit of money. Sometimes it is money well spent. Other times, the simple problem could be the fact that many people don’t know about Safe Mode. If you have a virus or a malware issue, the chances are, someone else has had it as well. Google is your best bet for understanding the virus and where it is. Once you’ve established the location both on your computer and in the registry (the real brains of the computer), you can eliminate almost any virus you have, especially if it is a malware software virus.
In order to begin removing malicious software, download Malwarebytes which will detect and remove malware that does not belong on your computer.
Once you’ve determined and written down the locations of the files, you can restart your computer in Safe Mode by shutting down and restarting, and hitting or holding down F8 as your computer is restarting. This will give you some options. Start your computer in Safe Mode. When you are in safe mode, only essential files will be loaded. What happens in regular Windows mode is that you cannot delete files when they are running, making it hard to delete viruses or malware. When you are in Safe Mode, these files cannot run giving you all access to delete them.
PROBLEM: Your computer is full of malware virus software and your computer is slow and filled with unknown programs, specifically on your Internet Explore, Firefox, or Chrome toolbar.
SOLUTION: If you can determine the name of the software, such as Conduit or Hot Search or DealBrowsing, you can Google their names to figure out who to remove them. The most important information is discovering the location of these files on the hard drive.
The registry also tells the computer to load them when the computer starts. Before messing with the registry, make a backup by clicking on File and Export. The registry is the brains of the computer and if you mess up something essential, the computer may fail to start completely. You will need to check HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Run. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE also may contain files that do not belong. If you see the location of the malware as an entry in these areas, be sure to delete it.
Once you delete these items, be sure to run Malwarebytes again to double check and ensure everything has been removed.
You may also need to reset Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox.
Internet Explorer: Tools > Advanced > Reset
Chrome: Settings > Show Advanced Settings > Reset Browser Settings.
Firefox: Help > Troubleshooting Information > Reset Firefox.
This will bring all browsers back to the point when you first installed them, without losing all of your personal information and bookmarks.
Many problems can be solved through Safe Mode but there will be other viruses that may require a reformat or professional technical support. Teaching yourself how to fix your own computer is a good way to understand your computer and will also save you money in the long run. It is also a great way to make money, especially if you have neighbors who cannot or do not want to learn how to fix their own computers.
