Porn and Technology
I regularly write about the topics of love, sex and relationships and I produced this infographic.
It was fascinating learning about how demand for porn and erotica led to technology developing at a faster pace. Its impact on the development of faster broadband, along with online payment systems, and even 3G mobile today is truly amazing. The advances in technology over the last 25 years have been amazing. It has completely transformed the way we live our lives.
One of the key factors to influence this innovation in tech is the demand for pornography and erotica. As far back as the early days of cable television, the demand for pornography has resulted in an increased demand for such services. Even today, the development of 3G and faster broadband continues to be driven by the demand for pornography.
Is this really surprising when over 20% of searches on Google are for pornography? Amazingly, in 1999, we spent more on pornography than we did on books or flights when using the internet. This drove the development of safe online payment systems like PayPal.
This infographic from A Touch of Class Companions describes the impact the pornography industry has had on the development of so many innovative products that we use and take for granted every day.

How Porn Drove Innovation In Tech
For decades, even centuries, adult entertainment is said to have boosted the adoption of new media formats and pioneered technological innovations. Are we underestimating the influence the adult entertainment industry has had on the tech boom in the last 50 years?
CABLE TELEVISION
Pornography helped establish cable as a consumer medium.
In 1976, Manhattan Public Access Cable had about 80,000 subscribers before George Urban launched, “The Ugly Hour of Truth, Sex and Violence“.
Thirteen episodes later, subscriptions were over 100,000, and by the end of the second season, they were up to 300,000.
THE VCR
The VCR itself might never have gotten off the ground had the adult entertainment industry not stepped in as early adopters. Most people were perfectly happy going out to a movie, and saw no need for an expensive new home viewing device.
Pornography consumers changed all that. They were some of the first to buy VCR’s, keeping the technology viable long enough for it to become mainstream.
THE EXPLOSION OF THE INTERNET
The late 1970s and early 1980s saw the birth of the first home computers. This paved teh way for the first online adult porn services to be offered in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
From then on, the web grew exponentially, leading the dot.com boom. This was driven largely by widespread worldwide demand for porn and erotica.
ONLINE PAYMENT SYSTEMS
Internet users spent roughly $1.3 billion on online porn in 1999. This amounted to 8% of all online commerce that year, and was more than people were spending online on books or flights. At that time, the porn industry was the leading online industry.
Porn pioneered the e-commerce and security solutions that paved the way for Paypal, eBay, Amazon, and the commercialization of the Internet.
By 2006, internet pornography was generating just $2.8 billion in revenues-a much smaller piece of the online pie, which has grown to $150 to $200 billion.
STREAMING CONTENT
In 1994, Dutch porn company Red Light District developed the first workable Internet-based video streaming system. They blazed the trail for CNN.com (1995), YouTube (2005), Hulu (2008) amongst others.
Without streaming pornography, today’s webcasts – from presidential address to viral kitten videos – may still be the stuff of science fiction.
LIVE VIDEO CHAT
Since the early days of the internet, video chat has been an area of interaction and profitability in the pornography business.
Internet-based videoconferencing for business has drawn on the technology that the adult industry pioneered.
FASTER BROADBAND
In the early years of the web, the adult industry and its customers had an insatiable need for more and more broadband. At the time basic modems were the fastest available connection.
Online music sharing and pornography were the major factors driving broadband penetration in Europe.
Demand for sexual content drove the market for improved routers, switches, relays, and others fundamental Internet infrastructure.
DIGITAL CAMERAS
Porn photographers appreciated not having to take their film to be developed by a member of the public.
Privacy concerns about their content drove them to become early adopters of digital photography and drove sales.
DIGITAL-RIGHTS MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
Like the music and film industries, the adult-entertainment industry has grappled with digital piracy.
The industry has developed software that wraps digital content in a high-tech force field.
The process has tested successfully in the adult industry and has drawn interest from music and movie companies.
The system asks for a payment or lets viewers see the clip if they agree to watch ads.
3G Mobile
Looking at over one million hits to Google’s mobile search sites, more than 20% of searches on mobile devices are for pornography.
In the same way that adult content helped drive ADSL internet connectivity, mobile porn unlocked demand for high-speed 3G on mobile, especially as smart phone penetration grows.
In 2015, it is predicted that mobile adult content and services will pass $2.8 billion, mobile adult subscriptions will reach almost $1 billion, and mobile adult video on tablets will triple worldwide.
